My dear sirs, it is with just such

are always there
and I love it all—good and bad.
"This week the rains came—a
couple of us walked in a downpour

and loved it all. Nothing stops here
because of rain. This is Israel and
rain is important.
"Last week we had a trip to the
Bethlehem Fair (the first since
1967) and to Jerusalem. It was
wonderful. You will have to read
between the lines and know that I
am very happy here."

Can't you see how irrelevant it
is to personal religious feelings to
rule that one cannot drive on the
Shabat? Can't you see how very
much such legalistic hair-splitting .
has in fact itself desecrated the
Shabat? It has made it a day to
he remembered by observing
picayunish, meaningless, imprac-
tical rules!
To me, the idea of Shabat is
one of the things that can be
humanizing about Judaism. that
can he relevant to me as a per-
son. The idea of a day of rest.
a day on which one rests as one
pleases is central to that which
attracts me to Judaism. To me,
the idea of being told how to
observe a day of rest is repul-
sive; it takes anything personal
out of what is essentially a
deeply personal concept, it is
contradictory to the meaning of
the word "rest" itself . . .
