Two Young Artists to Perform
in Music Study Club's Concert

Music Study Club of Detroit will
present Isidor Saslav, violinist,
and Maria Ewing, mezzo soprano,
at its 45th anniversary concert 7:30
p.m. Sunday at Oak Park High
School's auditorium.
Proceeds (ruin the event will
provide scholarships for talented
young musicians and opportunities
for them to apepar professionally
in concert. as well as music schol-
arships and instruments for Israel.
The club also participates with
Wayne State University in its
Public School Junior String Proj-
ect, which enables six string
majors at the university to give
free lessons to 30 youngsters of
families with limited income.
Sashay, 31. a native of .Jerusa-
lem. was brought to this country
as a child. His early musical train-
ing in Detroit was with Jerome
Stasson, who nurtured the boy's
talent until he was ready to con-
tinue under the guidance of Mischa
Mischakoff. Music Study Club
awarded young Saslav a number
Of scholarships to assist him. In
1955, he joined the Detroit Sym-
phony, under Paul Paray. as its
youngest member.
Three years later. he left for a
year's study in Munich and upon
his return was presented by the
Music Study Club at its 1959 An-
nual Artist Concert..In 1961. he
received his BA in music at Wayne
State and his music masters and
music doctorate from Indiana Uni-
versity, whesre he majored in
violin under Josef Gingold.

tival in Puerto
Rico for eight
years, concert-
master of the
Buffalo Philhar-
monic Orchestra
and the Minne-
sota Sy mphony
and this season.

Miss Ewing was born in Detroit
in 1950. She began her serious

vocal studies with Marjorie Gordon

and in summer 1967 was awarded
a full scholarship •
to the Cleveland
Institute of Mu-
sic and is cur-
rently studying

first place in both Miss Ewing
the district and regional competi-
tions. This coming December. she
will sing the role of Rosina in

Dr. Alex Friedlaender was
elected president-elect of the
American Association for Clin-
ical Immunology and Allegry at
the annual meeting in Okla-
homa City last week. Dr. Fried-
laender is clinical assistant pro-
fessor of medicine at Wayne
State University's school of
medicine, chief of the allergy
section at Grace Hospital and on
the staff of Sinai Hospital.
