WASHINGTON — Mrs. Leonard
Weiner, one of the Detroit Jewish
community's first ladies, flew to
Washington last week to host a
luncheon for the First Lady of the
land. Pat Nixon.
Volunteer work with children
was the mutual interest that
brought Mrs. Weiner, president of
the National Council of Jewish
Women, and Mrs. Nixon together.
The setting was. the Council's
luncheon—given by the Washing-
ton Section—to mark the launch-
ing of its volunteer day-care center
at Georgetown University Hospital
here. The D.C. section of the
NCJW is the first organization to
volunteer support and staff a day-
care center in the nation's capital.
This activity is in keeping with
Mrs. Nixon's emphasis on big-city
volunteer action programs.
Mrs. Weiner. of Warehan Dr.,
Iluntington Woods, who presided
at the benefit luncheon, announced
a grant of $5,000 from the National'
Council to help in establishing the
day-care center. She told of her
pride in aiding the nation's capital
to establish such a center.

center will be housed in George-

Development and Diagnostic Cen-
ter, a facility for the study and
treatment of culturally or emo-
tionally-retarded children. It will
also serve as a half-way house
for the young "graduates" of
the diagnostic center. Members
of the Council of Jewish Women,
who will serve as volunteers at
the center, will train additional
volunteers for work in similar
centers.
