Detroit Group Sponsors Ashdod First Aid Shelter;
Hagen David Adorn Chapter Raises Supporting Fund

A first aid shelter to he estab-
lished by Magen David Adorn, the
Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross
in Ashdod, Israel, is assured
sustanance by the response given
to an appeal for its establishment ,
at the newly-created Michigan
chapter of Magen David Adorn.
At the initial meeting of the
new chapter at the Town and
Country Club in Southfield Tues-
day evening, the sum of $41,968
was pledged for that purpose. I
Initial gifts included a $10,000 ,
contribution by the Louis and
Samuel Hamburger families, in
whose names the auditorium will
be named at the Ashdod shelter.
Conducted under the chair-
manship of Dr. Morris Stark-
man, who outlined the objec-
tives of the cause and reported
on progress made to enlist

compliments of the movement
were outlined by the president
of the Michigan chapter, Dr.
John Haines.
Guest speaker at the meeting
was the Israel consul general for
the Midwest, Shaul Ramati, who
described Israel's difficulties in
the present critical threatening sit-
uation from hostile neighbors, and
described Magen David Adorn as
concerning itself "directly with the
lifeblood of our people and its
defensive needs."
Ramati pointed out that "Israel
is at peace but the army is at
war" in his description of condi-
tions which show the normality of
life within Israel while the country
is under constant threat from its
neighbors.
He referred to the raid on Egypt
by the Israeli armed forces that
clay as part of the determination
of the people not to permit intru-
tion from forces that seek the na-
tion's destruction, and he gave
assurance that there will be re-
sistance as long as there is terror-
ism aimed at undermining the life
of the people of Israel.
Pointing out that within a
week there were 21 casualties in
the Israel army, Ramati said
that it would be equivalent to
1,900 losses in America propor-
tionate to the country's popula-
tion, and he added that "it is a
heavy price to pay but we have
no choice."
lie defined the needs of Israel
which have grown in its current
state of tension and he emphasized
that Magen David Adorn is a very
vital service for the people, with
Ashdod being a strategic point

that must be protected. "It is
easier to withstand danger when
we know that there are shelters
in time of need."
Dr. Mames reported that there
are 300 ambulances in the Magen
David Adorn fleet and that the
movement sponsors 72 first aid
shelters, with more to be added.
Roger Rosengarten, assistant na-
tional director of Magen David
Adorn, another guest speaker at
Tuesday's gathering, declared that
"in case of emergency we save
lives." He urged continuation of
a partnership between Israelis and
American Jews as symbolized at
Tuesday's meeting, for the sake
of the life-saving tasks.
As honorary chairman of the
Michigan chapter of Hagen Da-
vid Adorn, Gen. S. L. A. Mar-
shall applauded the raid into
Egypt as a necessity for Israel's
defense and protection. He ex-
pressed confidence that Israel
can continue defensive efforts,
stating that "Israel is doing far
better than we know" and said
he was certain about Israel's
power to survive because "Israel
has what it takes."
Playing important roles in boost-
ing the cause and in assuring in-
itial sums for ambulances and the
first aid shelter were Shaarit Hap-
leyta and the Einstein Lodge of
Bnai Brith.
Extension of membership activ-
ities for Magen David Adorn was
announced by Drs. Starkman and
Ma mes.

The City of Southfield Adminis-
trative Civil Service Commission
has amended its personnel regula-
tions so that the observance of a
religious holiday s now accepted
as a valid day off for personal
reasons.
The action was taken following
efforts of the Jewish Community
Council to have the amendment
adopted.
Prior to the new ruling: persons
who wished to take off work to
observe religious holidays, other
than the paid legal holidays, were
not permitted to make use of per-
sonal business days for this pur-
pose.
Employes either worked extra
hours to make up for the time
taken off or they were not paid for
the time.
Hubert Sidlow, chairman of
the Jewish Community Council
internal relations committee, met
with commission members early
in the year to present the Coun-
cil's proposals. At its meeting
Sept. 2, the commission approved
the amendment to its regulations
which would in effect incorporate
these proposals.
Employes were formerly allowed
two days with pay for personal
business reasons, along with the
regular sick leave. Now, they may
use the two days for purposes of
religious observance.
