Robert Kennedy Memoir Reveals
Senator's Multi-Faceted Attitudes

A family's tragedies have con-
tributed towards keeping the Ken-
nedy name in the public limelight.
American history will mark indeli-
bly the sufferings
that have been
afflicted on that
name with the
many sufferings
endured by the
Kennedys.
To one of them,
Robert Kennedy,
a tribute is paid
in a memoir oy
Jack Newfield,
published by E. P.
Dutton Co. (201
Park, S., NY3).
It is a deeply
Kennedy
moving account
of an active man, his life's tribula-
tions, the successes he attained. his
near success for the presidency,
and the ensuing tragedy.
In "Robert Kennedy: A Memoir.
Newfield reviews the late Senator's
life, his role as his brother's (Pres-
ident John F. Kennedy) close asso-
ciate, his place in the U.S. Senato.

sination. He is deeply affected by
the end, there are tears over the
death of a close friend whom he
admired in life, who is admired
biographically.
There is marked tribute to the
deceased senator in Newfield's
assertion: "Because of his own

early experiences, Kennedy was

predisposed to identify with any-
one who was small and had to
struggle fiercely against adver-
sity. The Mexican and Filipino
agricultural workers in Califor-
nia, and their leader Cesar Cha-
vez, fit into this category. So did
the young black militants he met
caged up in the ghettos. So did
small, young nations who had to
fight for independence, like Ken-
ya and Israel." A footnote' adds:
"Covering the Arab-Israeli war
in 1948 for the now defunct Bos-
ton Post. Kennedy wrote of Is-
rael. 'They are a young, tough,
determined nation.... They fight
with unparalleled courage.' "

About Kennedy's earlier align-
ment with the reactionary forces of
the late Senator Joe McCarthy,
Newfield states:

"In large part, it was Kennedy's
cultural conditioning as a Boston
Catholic that made it so easy for
him to make a mistake of the mag-
nitude of working for—and admir
in Joe McCarthy. For Kennedy to
drift into the atavistic subculture of
McCarthyism was as logical as for
a proletarian Jew at City College
in the 1930s to become a Marxist.

was a natural McCarthy bastion.
McCarthy himself was a friend of
the Kennedy family. He joined
them occasionally for athletic
competition. and he dated Patricia
Kennedy briefly in Washington.
McCarthy offered himself as a
handy bludgeon against the 'Yan-
kees, Jews and eggheads' that Mas-
sachusetts Catholics resented for so
long. And Catholics. partly because
of the persecution of their coreli-
gionists in Eastern Europe. have
traditionally been much more anti-
Communist than P rotestants or
Jews."

In this respect, the Kennedy bi-
ographer reveals interesting atti-
tudes. About the senator. the biog-
rapher writes with affection ana
presents all sides of a turbulent
career of the man who might have
become President.

Prayers Chanted
in Sobbing Tones

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

Rosh Hashana's universal message

of peace, of good will among men,

strengthens us in our prayers and

worldwide accord, for unity

the time for cooperation and accord

among all nations . . . May this New

Year bring us closer to the realiza-

Prayers are offered in a sobbing
or crying tone because man is sup-
posed to consider himself helpless
before the Almighty—not only help-
less but worthless. Therefore, he
must seek grace and pity. Second-
ly, the rabbis write (Zohar, Teru-
ma) that since the destruction of
the Temple the "gates of prayer"
have been closed and only the
"gates of tears" are open and
accessible. The Jew, therefore,
often sheds a tear during his pray-
ers. If he cannot cry, he at least
chants his prayers in a broken
voice. Especially is this the case
when prayers of penitence and
confession are offered. The tears
or the broken voice are also per-
haps a means of symbolizing man's
realization of his own shortcom-
ings, as well as those of society
for which he is held responsible.
