tan means small, and Shulamit
Katan is exactly that. But when it
comes to accomplishments, a more
fitting name would be "Gadol"—

The diminutive Jerusalem house-
wife is recipient of Jerusalem's
first prize for good citizenship, set
up by Dr. Israel Goldstein, chair-
man of the Keren Hayesod, and
Mrs. Goldstein.
While raising 11 children, Mrs.
Kattan managed to:

gee children in Southern France
during World War II, while she
herself was a refugee from her
native Germany.

five children. Because of the diffi-
culty of finding proper accommo-
dation, the family settled in a run-
down dwelling in Sanhedria on the
very border of the Jordanian and
Jewish sectors of Jerusalem. She
gave birth to six more children.
Subsequently, four got married
and added six grandchildren to
Mrs. Kattan's brood.
Made it possible for her hus-
