From Moon: To the Universally Humane

To and from the Moon: it was an experi-
ence that will be recorded among the most
miraculous in history and as man's greatest
achievement.
Now, back to earth, we are rising above
speculation. We are reaching a new stage in
man's thinking.
The entire universe now should make of
Man the symbol of genuine universality. We
have conquered space—and the tribute is so
much to the genius of America that we stand
in awe revering Mind above Matter!
It was more than a scientific achievement.
It has led to the recognition that the entire
world is one, that Man can differ only if his
heart is hard, if his mind is dull, if his think-
ing is uncreative.
As long as Man is Human, we are all alike,
wherever we are. Blood flows in our veins in
the same fashion whether our skin is light or
dark, and the creative spirit is resident in all
of us—as long as we are not destructive.
All of which poses the supreme question:
if man can attain the conquest of space, why
can't man conquer his passions? This is what
the 'Ethics of the Fathers teach us: He is

strong who conquers his passions!

If we can attain such heights in the uni-
verse, why can't we rise above prejudices to-
wards our neighbors?
If Man can walk on the Moon, why can't
men walk humbly when dealing one with
another?
If we could attain what the astronauts did
in space, we should be able to accomplish
much more. We should be able to end wars
—we can start with Vietnam! We should have
peace in the Middle East as well as the Far
East: why can't the Jewish and Arab cousins
live in harmony? Israel pleads for it, but the
Big Powers were too busy creating spaceships,
without giving equal consideration to the
human elements on this planet.

YIVO Annual Contains Many
Informative Historical Essays

A variety of important Jewish problems is dealt with in the "YIVO
Annual of Jewish Social Science" just issued as Volume XIV by YIVO
Institute for Jewish Research.
Russian Jewish historical matter, Yiddish, discord over relief move-
ments, the Bund, religious and cultural problems in Eastern Europe—
these are among the various subjects discussed by prominent authori-
ties.
In view of the frequently probed question whether there was
sufficient resistance by Jews against Nazism, the essay "The
Kristallnacht and the Reaction in America" by Sander A. Diamond
has special significance. Outlining the events that transpired, the
reactions, the early protests and the latter, Diamond declares: "It
can be stated with some certainty that many Americans were alert-
ed to the dangers of Nazism by the Kristallnacht. But within a few
months other events took precedence—national defense and concern
over the deterioration of European conditions—and the plight of the
Jews became a matter of lesser importance. Unfortunately, far too
many people soon forgot the incident and even fewer took note of
and poverty. But Cleaver seems less inter-

Nazi Crimes — Not to Be Forgotten or Forgiven

Renewed vandalism in German y, the
mounting threats from the ranks of the reac-
tionary NPD and the manner in which punish-
ment for Nazi crimes is being reduced to a
minimum adds to the concern that the efforts
to- erase the guilt of the Hitler hordes is suc-
ceeding.
True, 24 years have elapsed since the
1101ocattst,- and - many in Germany today are

unfamiliar with the crimes and the criminals.
But there still are too many at large who had
a hand in the mass murders.
And if these escape punishment, what
hope is there for the generations to come?
If the crimes are to be forgotten, they may
also be condoned.
There is an effort to forgive add to forget,
and neither is permissible.

gives this review special status.
Renewed interest in Yiddish is evidenced again in the article by
Joshua A. Fishman, "Language Maintenance and Language Shift:
Yiddish and Other Important Languages in the United States." It is a
splendid analysis of the progress that was made by Yiddish and the

fact that as a result of many years of Yiddish literary activities and
the prominence the language attained by its use on public platformS
and as a means of communication by Jews, "American Yiddish literary
and cultural creativity has continued at a first-rate level for over 50
years."
Ezra Mendelsohn's "The Russian Jewish Labor Movements'
M. Altshuler's "The Attitude of the Communist Party of Russia to
Jewish National Survival, 1918-1930," Jacob S. Hertz's "The Bund's
Nationality Program and Its Critics in the Russian, Polish and
Austrian Socialist Movements" and Moshe Mishkinski's "Regional
Factors in the Formation of the Jewish Labor Movement in Czarist
Russia" provide basic details regarding the labor elements among
Jews in Russia in the first three decades of this century.
Another essay dealing with a factor in Yiddish is W. Glicksman'S
"The Halutz Ideology and Experience as Reflected in the Yiddish Novel
in Poland, 1919-1939." The new concern over conditions in Poland gives
added importance to this essay.
The articles in this volue are not limited to the overseas problems.
There are three essays of special interest as American objectives.
Incidents of interest are reviewed by Burton Alan Boxerman Is
"Rise of Anti-Semitism in St. Louis, 1933-1945." The activities of the
German Bund and Nazi elements are exposed here.
Then there is the article by Robert E. Levinson, "Julius Basinstl:
Pioneer Montana Merchant," and Tamara K. Hareven's "Un-American
America and the Jewish Daily Forward." The latter is a good study of
Yiddish journalism and especially of the Forward's reaction to Ameri-
can issues in the time of Abraham Cahan. While there was no religious
interest in the editorial policy, the author of this essay points out that
there was reflected in the Forward's policies an "ethnic solidarity" Wilt
Jewry.
The VIVO annual adds immeasurably to the wealth of literary
material encouraged by the Institute for Jewish Research.
