Editor. The Jewish News:
A subject has bothered me for a
long time applying to the Jewish
youth of America, and I seek the
answer from you.
Having a connection with a syn-
agogue from birth, and belonging
to a Jewish youth group, I often
hear: "You can only date and mar-
ry within our religion. Otherwise
you are no longer a member of
this household" from the parents
of my friends. This is a standard
statement in most every Jewish
home. I'm sure.
Fine, so we date and marry Jew-
ish. But then some kid asks: "Why
don't we keep kosher, Mom? Why
do you bring shrimp into the house?
Why do you only got to shule on
Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur? I
want to follow the rules of the Law
like they teach me in the Hebrew
school you send me to."
The reply: "I don't want you
coming in and telling me how to
run my house. When you have your
, own, you can do whatever you
want."
So, you're probably wondering
what all this means. What I'm try-
ing to make you realize is that
you're saying: "Marry Jewish, but
don't be Jewish." Why? It's beyond
me!

Mixed Media: The Pens of Pope and Beardsley

It is unusual for a writer to find
an illustrator for his works who can
translate the words into pictures
without losing any of the meaning
or flavor of the original. It is even
more unusual for a writer to find
an illustrator who can go beyond
this and enrich the meaning and
flavor of his work.
Alexander Pope was doubly for-
tunate, for although it took almost
200 years, an illustrator was found
who was not only able to capture
the spirit of his humorous mock-
epic poem, "The Rape of the
Lock," but was also able to enhance
its effect. Of course Pope did not
"find" Aubrey Beardsley; he only
inspired him. But that inspiration
was so great that Beardsley, almost
200 years after the publication of
"The Rape of the Lock," felt
Pope's sharp wit as keenly as did
Pope's contemporaries.
Dover Publications has reissued
the original, unaltered (1696) edi-
tion of "The Rape of the Lock,"
"embroidered" with nine drawings
by Aubrey Beardsley (paperback).

Beardsley conveys the lavish, com-
ical and witty mood of the poem in
the nine black and white decorative
drawings. They were , created dur-
ing the last phase of Beardsley's
brief career.

Editor, The Jewish News:
It was with much pleasure I read
of President Nixon's invitation to
the distinguished theologian, Dr.
Louis Finklestein. The only criteria
for criticism that I can see is the
poor taste in including a predom-
inantly Christian hymn in an anti-
cipated Jewish service. It is anal-
