NEW YORK (JTA) — A socio-
logical survey of Jews in Sao
Paulo, Brazil, undertaken by the
local Jewish federation in colla-
boration with the American Jewish
Committee, has revealed the same
patterns of change in Jewish life
that have occurred in the major
cities of North America, AJCom-
mittee President Philip E. Hoff-
man disclosed.
He said that the study, directed ,
by Dr. Henrique Rattner, profes-
sor of social sciences at the Univer-
sity of Sao Paulo, showed a trend
away from traditional customs and
practices and away from the old
Jewiih neighborhoods as families
acquired affluence, and as the
number of native-born adults ex-
ceeded the immigrant population.
Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest com-
mercial and industrial center, has
a Jewish population of about 50,-
000, over 50 per cent born in Brazil.
