Instructive 'History of American Revolution'

A thorough study of the Amer-
ican Revolution, based on deep re-
search, has just been issued by
Knopf:
"A History of the American Rev-
olution" by Prof. John R. Alden,
emerges as one of the most signifi-
cant works of research on the
subject.
Dr. Alden, a native of Michigan,
who studied at the U. of M. and
had a U-M professorship among
the academic roles he has played

in recent years, touches upon the
basic political aspects as well as
the economic, the military and the
social.
Prof. Alden points out in the
course of his analyses that "the
Jews supplied devout Loyalists
as well as devoted Patriots."
Touching upon the question of
religious freedom, Dr. Alden states
that in the period between 1776 and
1787 "liberal-minded men continued
to fear that religious tyranny would
be revived by arrogant bishops, in-
tolerant clergymen and ignorant

tion of a national church. They de-
manded that it be altered so as to

ligion, or prohibiting the free exer-
cise thereof.' That provision was,

to the several states as well as the
United States. Even so, all the ties
between government and religion
in America were not, and are not,
cut. Christian sects and Christians

ed above the others." But he
amends this by saying: "Fortu-
nately, most of the great leaders
of the Revolutionary generation
were devoted to religious as well
as political liberty. Christian by
inheritance and rearing, they de-
clined in maturity to believe that
the whole truth about man, about
the universe, was to be found in
revelations vouchsafed to certain
persons among the Hebrews
more than 17 centuries before
their own time. Nor could they
concede the validity of elaborate
and ingenious interpretations of
the personality and mission of
Christ offered by ancient Greek
logicians, by St. Augustine, by
Thomas Aquinas, by the papacy,
by Martin Luther, by John Cal-
vin, or by Anglican Archbishop
William Laud. Much less could
they accept a claim by any cler-
gyman that he or his church pro-
vided the one and only avenue to
personal salvation. In their old
age Jefferson and John Adams
exchanged opinions in a fascinat-
ing series of letters. Jefferson de-
clared that he detested the Ro-
man Church. Why, asked Adams,
should the Virginian confine his
loathing to that one church? All
religious hierarchies, asserted
Adams, were as vicious as orders
of nobility."
Students of the history of that
period as well as of the Constitu-
tion will find immense value in the
research and conclusions of Dr.
Alden. "Sanctioning the Constitu-
tion," he declares, "the Americans
confirmed the far-reaching reforms
of the Revolution and opened the
way for many more wholesome
changes to come."
Alden's "A History of the Amer-
ican Revolution" is one of the great
works on a subject that is limitless
and is made more understandable
by the author of this significant
work.

LANSING—Pharmacists through-
out Michigan are participating in
a public education program on
poison prevention, and prepared-
ness in case of an accidental
poisoning, announced Robert C.
Johnson, executive director of the
Michigan State Pharmaceutical
Association.
Over 500,000 children are acci-
dentally poisoned in the United
States each year. More than 2,000
deaths could be attributed to pois-
oning by either solids or liquids, of
which the largest classification is
medicines.
In 1967, there were 72,661 inges-
tions among children under five
years of age. More than half of
the fatalities occur in children
under age 4.
To attempt to reduce these fig-
ures, the Michigan State Pharma
ceutical Association is undertaking
a program to educate the children
and teach them to respect drugs.
