CHEERFUL CHARITY
Charity should be given cheer-
fully, warmly, and comfortingly.
There are eight degrees of char-
ity, each one higher than the
other. The highest is to aid a man
by offering him a gift or loan or
by providing work for him so that
he-may become self-supporting.

Uzi Narkiss, the Israeli general
whose troops liberated and re-
united Jerusalem during the Six-
Day War, will address an open
meeting 8 p.m. April 10 at the
Jewish Center.
Narkiss, who will speak on
"Israel's Needs Today," is on a
national tour as director-general
of the Jewish Agency's depart-
ment of immigration and absorp-
tion.
Narkiss retired from the army
last July at age 43 to direct the
agency which plans and - co-
ordinates Israel's program for re-
ceiving and settling immigrants.
Narkiss, who was born in Jeru-
salem in 1925, has been a soldier
since age 16, when he joined the
Hagana and Palmah commandos.
His military career was climaxed
in June 1967, when he commanded
Israel's central front in the war
against Jordan and his forces
captured the Arab-held section of
the Old City of Jerusalem.
Narkiss was second in com-
mand of a battalion on the Jeru-
salem front when statehood was
proclaimed on May 14, 1948.
Three days later, he directed
the historic attack which cap-
tured Mt. Zion from the Arab
Legion.
He then was promoted to batta-
lion commander on the southern,
or Negev front. His 350-man force
routed Egyptian invaders clear-
ing a corridor to the Negev, then
captured Beersheba, and continu-
ing southward into the desert,
planted Israel's flag on the sands
of Eilat.
Later, as adviser to the chief
of staff, General Moshe Dayan,
Narkiss helped plan and carry out
the Sinai Campaign of 1956, and
was promoted to colonel.
