Apocryphal Texts

PHILADELPHIA — The publica-
tion of "Jewish Apocryphal Litera-
ture," recognized as one of the
most important and scholarly proj-
ects of the times, will be continued
by Dropsie College for Hebrew and
Cognate Learning.
Dr. Solomon Zeitlin, Horace
Stern Profesor of Rabbinic Law
and History at the college, will
continue as editor-in-chief for this
major literary project; and Dr.
Abraham I. Katsch, president of
the post-graduate institution, has
been elected chairman of the newly
constituted editorial board.
The new editions and transla-
tions planned under the general
title of "Jewish Apocryphal Litera-
ture" will restore the scriptures
known as the Apocrypha and Pseu-
depigrapha to their proper position
in Jewish literature.
These scriptures, while not re-
garded as inspired or authoritative,
were the product of that twilight
period in early Judaism between
the closing of the canon of the He-
brew Bible and the dawn of Chris-
tianity.

Representing a broad cross-section of
the nation's leading teachers and schol-
ars, the new editorial board includes
Dr. Ben-Zion Bokser of the Jewish The-
ological Seminary; Dr. Robert Gordis,
professor of Biblical Exegesis at the
Jewish Theological Seminary and visit-
ing professor at Temple University
Dr. Theodore H. Gaster, professor of
comparative religion at Barnard College
in New York and a visiting professor
at Dropsie College; Dr. Solomon Gray-
zel, professor of history at Dropsie
College; Dr. Jonos C. Greenfield, pro-
fessor of Bible at the University
of California; Dr. Sydney B. Hoe-
nig professor of history at Yeshiva
University; Dr. Milton R. Konvitz, pro-
fessor of law and industrial relations
at Cornell University; Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, executive head of the Devel-
opment Corp. for Israel and a member
of the board at Dropsie College; Rabbi
Daniel Jeremy Silver, of the Temple,
Cleveland; Dr. Harry A. Wolfson, pro-
fessor of philosophy at Harvard Univer-
sity; and from the Hebrew Union Col-
lege in Cincinnati, Dr. Harry M. Orlin-
sky, professor of Bible, Dr. Samuel
Sandel and Dr. Ellis Rivkin, professors
of history.
