Foundation to Advance Use of Standard Yiddish

NEW YORK—A special founda-
tion "to further the development
and utilization of standard Yid-
dish" has been initiated under
direction of lovers of Yiddish.
The "Benyumen Shekhter Foun-
dation for the Advancement of
Standard Yiddish" will finance re-
search and development projects
dealing with the grammar, style,
terminology and orthography of
the cultivated or standard Yiddish
employed by the best writers, tea-
chers and scholars.
The foundation also plans to sub-
sidize courses in standard Yiddish,
as well as to support institutions
and projects which further its use.
Named after Benyumen Shekh-
ter, a Romanian Yiddishist who

perished in a Soviet labor camp,
the foundation lists four major
published sources as currently de-
fining the rules of standard Yid-
dish: "Rules of Yiddish Spelling"
(first issued in Volno, Poland,
1937); N. Stutchkoff's "Thesaurus
of the Yiddish Language" (New
York, 1950), the "Guide to the

Standardized Yiddish Ortho-
graphy ' (New York, 1961), and
Uriel Weinreich's "M1o9d 6ern by Eng-
lish-Yiddish, Yiddish-English Die-
tionary," released in 1968
