Bormann, Other War Criminals
Alive in S. America-Wiesenthal
PARIS (JTA) — Simon Wiesen-
thal, the director of the Jewish
documentation center in Vienna,
who has devoted his life to track-
ing down wanted Nazi war crim-
inals, said in Strassbourg that
Hitler's deputy, Martin Bormann,
and a host of other wanted Nazis
are alive and hiding in South
America.
Wiesenthal also asserted that
other war criminals have found a
safe haven in East Germany where
one of them is now a member of
Parliament. He identified the latter
as Stefan Roick, who allegedly di-
rected the extermination of the
Lubin ghetto.
Wiesenthal spoke at a conference
organized by the Strassbourg
branch of the Bnai Brith. He said
Bormann was constantly on the
move between Paraguay, Chile and
southwestern Brazil. He is con-
stantly watched by bodyguards
who use special transmission equip-
ment to warn him of the presence
of strangers in his vicinity, Wies-
enthal said.
In addition to Bormann, South
America has provided a haven
for Gestapo chief Heinrich Mul-
ler; Richard Glucks, who was
inspector-general of the concen-
tration camps; and Josef Men-
gele, the notorious "death camp
doctor" of Auschwitz, Wiesen-
thal said.

He declared that according to
"highly reliable sources," these
men, if apprehended and extra-
dited, would not benefit from the
statute of limitations on war
crimes prosecutions that is sched-
uled to go into effect in West Ger-
many Dec. 31, 1969. The Bonn gov-
ernment would try them as it has
at its disposal huge amounts of
evidence against them, Wiesenthal
said.
He added, however, that because
of the safety precautions they take
the wanted Nazis could be arrested
only by the authorities of the coun-
tries in which they live.
British Jews Seek Support
for Aiding Kin in E. Europe
LONDON (JTA) A delegation
representing the Board of Deputies
of British Jews met with Goronwy
Roberts, minister of state at the
foreign office, to solicit the govern-
ment's support in helping harassed
and imperiled Jews in some East-
ern European and Arab countries.
The delegation, headed by Mi-
chael M. Fidler, president of the
board, reported that Roberts ex-
pressed concern and sympathy
with the humanitarian issues in-
volved and that further meetings
with foreign office officials will
take place. The delegation spoke
of the anti-Semitic campaign, in
the guise of "anti-Zionism," which
is being conducted by the Polish
government and the forthcoming
trials of Jewish students there.

Pincus Comes to U.S. to Complete

Marvelous Book
on Transportation
Young readers whose interest is
in the space flights, in the devel-
oping media for travel, in the man-
ner in which moving from one
place to another in a variety of
vehicles has changed through the
ages, will find themselves enam-
ored by the facts in a noteworthy
book..
Bernice Kohn wrote the remark-
ably fine book called "The Look-It-
Up Book of Transportation" pub-
lished by Random House. She had
the splendid assistance of George
Tuckwell who did the illustrating.
It is a large book and it an-
swers many questions. For in-
stance: Who was the first Ameri-
can to make a space flight? How
many know that it was done on
May 5, 1961, by Alan B. Shepard
Jr.?
Those who wish to know about
the cable car as well as the jet
plane, about the street car as well
as the steampship, and scores of
other means of transportation,
must turn the pages of this fas-
cinating book.
The young reader for whom this
book was written (the parent will
be equally enchanted by its con-
tents) will learn that the horse-
car was the earliest streetcar;
that a "howdah" is a seat or plat-
form used for riding on the back
of an elephant; that Draisine (bi-
cycle) in Europe and a Dandy
Horse—also a bicycle—in America
could be made to go fast as eight
miles an hour in Napoleon's time.
Listed alphabetically, assisted
by a complete index, told with a
simplicity that makes the work
stand out for its splendid descrip-
tions, Bernice Kohn's book is a
marvelous literary-scientific prod-
uct for our youth.
said here he would try to complete
establishments of an over-all Zion-
is federation.
He said he would seek to broaden
the scope of the Jewish Agency by
inclusion of many organizations
that contribute to Israel but are
not represented in Zionist councils.
Both projects represent the imple-
mentation of decisions reached by
the 27th World Zionist Congress
held in Jerusalem last June.
Pincus stressed the importance
of including in the Jewish Agency
the leaders of fund-rasing cam-
paigns for Israel and of the wel-
fare funds that contribute to
those campaigns. He said another
stage in the Jewish Agency's ex-
pansion will be inclusion of such
organizations as Bnai Brith and
various religious blocks in order
to rally as many pro-Israel
groups as possible under a single
roof.
Pincus said the Jewish Agency
and the Israel government would
invite 200 campaign leaders in the
U.S. to a discussion of Israel's
needs in education, housing, wel-
fare and culture and the primary
problem of immigration. He said
another meeting, set for Jan. 9, to
be attended by Jewish leaders from
abroad, would be a "spiritual con-
frontation" and dialogue between
Israel and disaspora Jewry.
Pincus said it was important that
aliya from the U.S. and Canada
increase 100 per cent in the next
three years and immigration from
France 300 per cent.
Supernatural
At bottom, this is the only cour-
age we are called upon to have:
the courage to face the strangest,
the most mysterious and the most
incomprehensible we may encoun-
ter. Cowardice in this sense has
done immeasurable harm to life;
our daily resistance has pushed
visions, death, the supernatural,
all those things that are so close
to us, so far out of life, that the
senses have been stunted by which
we could experience them.

Lebanese Release Students Arrested
for 'Inciting Riots'; Guard Jewish Area
TEL AIV (JTA) — Lebanese au-
thorities have released six foreign
Jewish students who were arrested
for allegedly inciting riots and
moved quickly last week to protect
Beirut's Jewish quarter from po-
groms by enraged Arab mobs. The
students reportedly of French and
Turkish nationality, were arrested
after accusations, published by
Lebanese newspapers, that they
and local Jews were responsible
for last week's student demonstra-
dons and riots in Beirut and
Tripoli.
One student was reported killed
and eight injured in what were ap-
parently clashes between factions
supporting Palestine Arab guerril-
las and groups opposed to the
commandos. Lebanese authorities
released the students quickly and
placed heavy guards around the
Jewish quarter.
Interior Minister Pierre Gemayel
urged citizens not to follow incite-
ment against a national minority.
