Detroiter Douglas Ross Writes Held at Beth Abraham
Impressive Sen. Kennedy Study
An able Detroit young man who
was a legislative assistant to
Michigan Congressmen and who
has made a deep study of current
political affairs
and structures, in
"Robert F. Ken-
nedy: Apostle of
Change," publish-
ed by Trident
Press, (630 5th,
NY20), provides
important histor-
ical data that re-
veal the attitudes
of the late U. S.
Senator and indi- Sen. Kennedy
cate the trend of our time in major
issues.
Douglas Ross, who has compiled
this work from the speeches of the
late Senator Kennedy, throws light
on occurrences that have puzzled
many people.
More than two years before Sen-
ator Kennedy was murdered by
the Jordanian Arab, Ross had
begun compiling this book. It at-
tains special merit now and the
fact that Ross had not changed the
text in spite of what happened on
June 5, 1968, the data in this evalu-
ation of "the apostle of change"
remains vital.
Because the assassin used his
enmity for Israel as a reason for
his murderous act, the chapter
devoted by Ross to "The Arab-
Israeli Crisis" assumes special
significance as history. In a
speech in the U.S. Senate, Feb.
3, 1965, the late New York Sena-
tor spoke for the objective of
"preventing aggression against
Israel." There are excerpts in
this volume from Kennedy's
speeches before American
Friends of the Hebrew Univer-
sity in 1965, at Young Israel
rally in Brooklyn in 1964, to Bnai
Zion at an award dinner in 1966,
to Amalgamated Clothing Work-
ers in 1964, to Mizrachi Women
in 1964 and at several functions
in 1967.
He addressed Bnai Brith a year
before his death, and the opening
statement in Ross' chapter on the
Arab-Israel crisis includes a
lengthy quotation from Senator
Kennedy's address at Fordliam
University, June 10, 1967, in which
he declared: "Our commitment to
Israel is clear . . . We must main-
tain our vigilance in her behalf."
Ross has brief comments on
many items and he explains the
background of the situation in the
Middle East for the reader's un-
derstanding of the position that
had been taken by Senator Ken-
nedy.
Ross leads his readers to a
better understanding of the per-
sonality of Senator Kennedy, his
views, his approaches to Amer-
ican policies. In his thorough
documentation of the Kennedy
statements, which were com-
pleted at the time of the trag-
edy that struck down the subject
of his historical-political analy-
sis, Ross told of many of the
events that affected the lives of
the Kennedys. He related how
Kennedy had befriended and ad-
mired the late Senator Joseph
McCarthy but indicated that he
would have voted against him
if he were then in the Senate.
Ross, who holds BA and MA
degrees from the University of
Michigan and who now teaches
in a Detroit ghetto school, is high-
ly qualified for the political his-
tory he has compiled about Sena-
tor Kennedy. He has gathered for
his notable book all the significant
data about Kennedy and his time.
As a result of his experiences
in the educational field and his
awareness of the dropouts' prob-
lems, Ross founded, in 1967, the
Detroit Volunteer Placement Corps
and his nonprofit organization has
placed 2,500 high school graduates
from ghetto areas in jobs, job-
training programs, and colleges.
Next September, Ross begins work
on his PhD at the Woodrow Wil-
son School at Princeton University
