Bonds Stimulate Cotton Crop

Israel's cotton crop, developed with the aid of Israel Bonds, has
become of-increasing importance in the country's economy in recent
years. Cotton growers, such as the one shown here, now cultivate
more than 50,000 acres and produce over 65,000 tons per year, a
tenfold increase during the past 10 years. The gross value of the
annual cotton crop is now $20,000,000, and textiles have become
Israel's second largest industrial export.

Jordan, With No True History as State,
`Brazen, Political Hoax,' Writes Author

The charge that "Jordan never
existed as an historic, genuine,
viable, truly sovereign state en-
tity" is made in a new book, "Jor-
dan, a State That Never Was," by
Dr. Joseph B. Schechtman.
Tracing the history of Jordan,
Dr. Schechtman says that the
country was "artificially and arbi-
trarily created 47 years ago, by
the British for the British," and
has never acquired "a collective
national identity of its own."
As a result, Dr. " Schechtman
Points out, "This artificially cre-
ated upstart, the so-called Hashe-
mite Kingdom of Jordan, has
assumed a central role in the
United Nations Middle East peace
efforts that is way out of propor-
tion to its historical, cultural and
political significance."
Dr. Schechtman is the author of
"The United States and the Jewish
State Movement," the two-volume
biography of Vladimir Jabotinsky,
"Rebel and Statesman" and
"Fighter and Prophet," as well as
15 other books and numerous mag-
azine articles.
The new book, published by
Cultural Publishing Co., 152 W.
42nd St., - New York City, chal-
lenges the view held by many
that Jordan has a historic past,
going back to biblical days, that
gives it inviolate boundaries as
a result of-historic tradition.
Dr. Schechtman charges that

"Through all the years of its make-
believe statehood, Jordan has been
the most brazen political hoax per-
petrated on gullible world public
opinion and the community of na-
tions." He states that it "has not
given security, prosperity, national
cohesion or happiness to its own
population and has been a source
of constant unrest, friction, conflict
and annoyance for all the nations
of the region, both Arab and Jew-
ish."
