Dr. Hayim Donin, rabbi of Cong.
Bnai David, has been granted a
10-month sabbatical leave which
he and his family
will spend in Is-
rael, _Harry Kol-
tonow, president
of the congrega-
tion, announced.
He will be leaving
Oct. 3, immedi-
ately after the
High Holy Days.
The rabbi and
his family spent
their summer va- Rabbi Donin
cation in Israel preparing for their
sabbatical leave. While living in
Jerusalem, Rabbi Donin will be en-
gaged in research and writing,
which he hopes to publish.
Rabbi Donin has been with the
congregation for 15 years. Under
his leadership, the congregation
moved to Southfield and completed
its entire building program. The
congregation now has a member-
ship of close to 700 families.-
Rabbi Donin is the author of .
"Beyond Thyself," as well as of
numerous articles and essays.
Ordained at Yeshiva University
in 1951, he has an MA from Col-
umbia University and received
his PhD from Wayne -State Uni-
versity.
Rabbi Aaron Brander, Bnai

duties during his absence.

role in the rescue and rehabilita-
tion of Jewish survivors in Europe
after World War II, will be the
guest speaker at
a pre-High Holy
reception 8:30
p. m. Thursday,
hosted by Mr.
and Mrs. Max
Stollman, at their
home, 12870 Bur-
n, Oak Park.
The reception is
on behalf of the
'Young Israel
'Congregations,
Levy including Young
Israel of Oak-Woods, Young Israel
of Greenfield and Young Israel of
Northwest Detroit, on behalf of
Israel Bonds.
Levy was a member of the first
group of representatives of the
Joint Distribution Committee to
enter the DP camps. He has served
as director of European operations
for HIAS, held top JDC posts, in-
cluding that of director of emigra-
tion in the Paris office of JDC,
JDC director for Tunisia and Al-
geria and as head of JDC in
Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria. Pre-
viously he had served with the
New York City Welfare Dept. and
with the Red Cross -during World
War II.

Mrs. Morris Mersky, director of
religious education for The New
Temple, will speak on the philoso-
phy and curriculum of the congre-
gational religious school following
services 8:30 p.m. today at Birm-
ingham Unitarian Church. All in-
terested persons are invited.
The religious school meets at
Eagle School, Farmington. Classes
range from kindergarten to 12th
grade, with mid-week Hebrew
scheduled for children in the fourth
grade or higher. Bar and Bat
Mitzva are optional; affirmation
is celebrated after the 12th grade
of study.
Rabbi Ernst Conrad teaches a
class for parents on Sunday morn-
ing, .as well as a class for children.
While it is illegal to drive a car
on Mackinac Island., you may do
so if it is preceded by a horse-
drawn cab.
