Bnai David Holds Leadership Fete

At the Bnai David Leadership reception-dinner held at the
Sheraton-Cadillac, where a total of $80,600 in Israel Bond subscrip-
tions was announced are (from left) seated, Mrs. Hyman J. Adler,
Mrs. Morris J. Brandwine, Mr. Brandwine, Mrs. Maurice M. Silver-
man and Dr. Silverman, the guest of honor, and Eleazar Lipsky, for-
mer president of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, who was the guest
speaker; standing, Max Sosin, toastmaster, Cantor Hyman J. Adler,
Mrs. Sosin, Harry Koltonow, president of the congregation, Mrs.
Koltonow, Rabbi Hayim Donin, Mr. and Mrs. Max Ostrow and Gen.
William J. Weinstein. The affair was in advance of the Bnai David
testimonial dinner to be held Sept. 18 to honor Dr. Silverman as
"Bnai David Man of the Year." Gen. Weinstein will be the toast-
master, Rabbi Donin will voice the tribute to Dr. Silverman, Cantor
Adler will render the musical salute, Shoshana Shoshan, Israel opera
star, will be the guest artist, U.S. attorney Lawrence Gubow will be
guest speaker; Lew Norman will be the guest star. ,

Bnai Israel Names Rabbi Minkowich
The new rabbi of Bnai Israel
Congregation, Pontiac, is Dr. Mey-
er Minkowich. He fills the vacancy
left by the death of Rabbi Israel
Goodman.
Dr. Minkowich was ordained
at Yeshiva Rabbinical Seminary
Etz-Chaim and earned a master
of arts degree in education from
the Hebrew University in Jeru-
salem.
A graduate of the Jerusalem
School of Law with a master of
jurisprudence degree, he was ad-
mitted to the Israeli Bar Associa-
tion. He served for some time in
Jerusalem as assistant district at-
torney.
Since coming to the United States
12 years ago, Rabbi Minkowich ob-
tained a PhD degree from Dropsie
College in Philadelphia.
Dr. Minkowich is the author of
several articles and two books in
the field of Jewish law and Eng-
lish common law.
The rabbi's last teaching posi-
tion was at Yeshiva University,
where he served as assistant pro-
fessor of Hebrew language, liter-
ature and history. He is a member
of the American Association of
University Professors.
`Midnight' Selihot Prayers Set
Setting the mood for the High
Holy Days, area synagogues will
hold their traditional midnight Seli-
hot ("Forgiveness") se r v i c e s,
many of them following social
hours and/or study sessions, Satur-
day evening. At least one group is
instituting a service of its own, and
Temple Israel is reviving, the
Selihot custom—marking the first
such "revival" by a major Reform
congregation in Detroit. (Temple
Beth Am and Temple Beth Jacob
held such services lastyear). The
public is invited to any of these
services.
Once again, because of Daylight
Savings Time, many synagogues
will hold services between 12:30
p.m. and .1 a.m. Sunday.
Cong. Ahavas Achim will start
its worship service at 12:30 p.m.
in the main sanctuary on Schaefer.
Cantor Simon Bermanis, assisted
by the Ahavas Achim Men's Choir
under Charles Weiner, will offi-
ciate.
Cong. Bnai Moshe will conduct
Selihot services at midnight. Can-
tor Louis Klein will be assisted by
the Bnai Moshe Men's Choir, di-
rected by Daniel Braude.
Temple Beth Jacob of Pontiac
will hold its services 11 p.m.
Saturday, when Rabbi Philip
Berkowitz will speak on "As the
Year Begins . . ."
Young Israel of Greenfield is
planning a study hour at 12:30 p.m.,
Prior to the services. Rabbi Samuel
H. Prero will instruct in "The Pro-
cess of Repentance," based on the
text of Maimonides. Cantor Ernest
E. Greenfield will lead the services
at 1 a.m.
Cong. Bnai Israel of Pontiac will
hold a social hour preceding Seli-
hot at 12:01 a.m. Rabbi Meyer
Minkowich will speak on "Listen
to Your Inner Voice."
Beth Jacob Offering
New Class in Hebrew
Temple Beth Jacob of Pontiac,
announces registration and the
opening of its religious school,
Sept. 23.
This year, under the direction of
Rabbi Philip Berkowitz, the tem-
ple .will offer an optional midweek
program featuring conversational
Hebrew, in addition to its regular
religious school and H e b r e w
classes.
The midweek program will be
based on "Hebrew Through Pic-
tures—Harvard Graded Direct Me-
thod." The language will be taught
by means of captionless film strip.
The "Hebrew Through Pictures"
series was prepared with the aid
of Dr. David Weinstein, now pre-
sident of the College of Jewish
Studies in Chicago. Rabbi Berko-
witz worked with Dr. Weinstein in
gaining the proper educational
techniques for teaching and admin-
istering this approach.

terhood will sponsor a pre-Seli-
hot coffee hour at 11 p.m., after
which Rabbi James I. Gordon
will deliver a message at 12:40
p.m. and Cantor David Green-
baum will lead the prayers.
