11 Sisterhoods Bring
Joy to Nursing Homes

Editor, The Jewish News:
Our community should t a k e
great pride in an activity which
took place during, the Passover fes-
tival under the sponsorship of the
commission on aging of the Jewish
Family and Children's Service.
In Detroit and its suburbs there
are over 350 aged and infirm Jew-
ish people who are residents of
nursing homes. Many are unable
to be with their loved ones for
the Passover seder, an occasion
most dear to their hearts. The
commission on aging, therefore,
felt it important to bring a seder
to them. Contact was made, by the
commission's nursing home com-
mittee, with the sisterhoods of 11
congregations in the community,
who, together with their cantor or
rabbi, performed a model seder
at a number of different nursing
homes during the immediate, days
of the festival.
The sisterhoods brought a great
deal of beauty and festive spirit
into the lives of these too-often
forsaken Jews.
It is to be hoped that this kind
of service will become common in
our city, and that the needs of
our elderly citizens will gain the
reconition` that they deserve and
so desperately require.

Foundation Setup

In 1947, when it became evi-
dent that the British would leave
Palestine and that the Arabs
would try to take advantage of
the ensuing chaos, Begin pro-
posed joint action against the
Arabs with other underground
movements, including Hagana.
Following the establishment of
the State of Israel in 1948, Irgun
Zvai Leumi, "together with the
other underground para-military
organizations, was dissolved and
made a part of the newly-formed
Israel Defense Forces.
Begin founded the Herut party
and has remained its leader ever
since. He was elected to the First
Knesset and to all subsequent
Knessets in which he has been the
leader of the second largest politi-
cal party and the official opposi-
tion. Throughout the past twenty
years he has been a member of
the all-important Knesset Commit-
tee on Foreign Affairs and Secur-
ity.
Begin has traveled widely on a
number of missions for Israel and

has published many articles in the
Israeli and foreign press. His ex-
periences in the dramatic days be-
fore the proclamation of the state
are recounted in his book "Revolt,'"
which has been translated into
major European languages.
"The dinner on June 4 will sym-
bolize Detroit's salute to the heroic
defenders of Israel during the six
days in June of 1967, and will also
help to advance Israel's progress
under freedom through the Israel ,--
Bond support of its economic de- (I
velopment," the Detroit committee
states.
