Cleveland Center Backs
Open Membership Policy

CLEVELAND (JTA)—The board
of the Jewish Community Center
has reaffirmed a policy of open
membership for all, "regardless of
race, religion or national origin."
The action was taken at a board
meeting after discussion stimulated
by a national Jewish Community
Center membership policy study,
made by the National Jewish Wel-
fare Board.
Max Friedman, JCC president,
said that the center had always
welcomed non-Jews "both as parti-
cipants and as members." He added
that "we believe that non-Jewish
participation helps to promote in-
ter-cultural understanding. At the
same time," he declared, "we are
dedicated to the proposition that
the presence of non-Jewish mem-
bers does not divert our agency in
any way in carrying out its dis-
tinctive Jewish programs."

ty what it has long learned.—Sen-

New Testament," including Psalms
of Solomon, Book of Enoch, Apo-
calypse of Baruch, Testaments of
the Twelve Patriarchs.
There is a section devoted to
"Hellenistic Literature Outside the
Bible," and here he devotes him-
self primarily to the writings of
Philo. Peculiarly, he rates Philo
as "a boring writer, and not the
least for his earnest efforts tO
allegorize everything that he finds
in the Hebrew scriotures, so as
to give a spiritual meaning to the
most trivial detail." He adds, how-
ever: "That he is important be-
cause he shows how the allegoriz-
ing method of Alexandrian schol-
ars which the Greeks applied to
their own myths, was capable of
being diverted by an ingenious
Jew to the extraction o' new mean-
Dv-is out V. such unpromising mate-
rial as Leviticus. This showed a
way which was afterwards fol-
lowed up by some Christians, with
rr.ther dubious results, as may be
in the so-called Epistle of Barna
bps."
These are rather rare criticisms,
but they inspire study and re-
search to ascertain the Philo philo-
sophical thesis in relation to bibli-
cal criticisms. The lengthy con-
sideration given to Philo by Prof.
Bouquet is in itself a valuable
commentary.
Concerning himself with the
hymns of the synagogue and
with talmudic lore, Dr. Bouquet
distinguishes between Tora and
talmudic teachings. He explains
the Mishna, the Tannaim and
the Geonim and quotes talmudic
tractates — Pesahim and Baba
Kamma. In relation to the quo-
tation from latter on Nezikin or
damages in civil law he states
that his selected portion is com-
parable to similar regulations
in the Code of Khammurabi and
regulations composed by Mos-
lems.

ers inserted as examples of Jewish

Aiming at a deeper understand-
ing of the religions of the world,
Dr. A. C. Bouquet of the Univer-
sity of Cambridge compiled ex-
cerpts from prayers and preach-
ments of various faiths for his
"Sacred Books of the World." This
volmne has just been reissued as
a paperback by Penguin Books.
Fragments of religious hymns of
extreme antiquity and primitive
chants are included in the first
portion of the book. They are fol-
lowed by hymns of ancient poly-
theisms and the literatures mark-
ing creative religious developments
—including the Old and New Testa-
ments—and the fourth and con-
cluding section is devoted to ex-
cerpts from Jewish literature and
prayers. from the Talmud, Hasidic
lore and liturgy as well as Moslem,
Japanese and other literary mate-
rial.
Dr. Bouquet explains the schol-
arship Masora in relation to the
Masoretic translations of the Old
Testament and describes the
work of the '72 scholars who were
responsible for the Septuagint
as legendary. His contention is,
in view of the Dead Sea Scrolls
findings, that knowledge of He-
brew scriptures has been revo-
lutionized.
For his scriptural selections he
included Exodus Amos, Micah,
Isaiah and Daniel.
In a section devoted to the Apo-
crypha, Dr. Bouquet deals with
what he calls "the 'borderline'
literature between the Old and the
