THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Communications Media Roles Viewed
in Relation to Current Race Issues

Coverage of news relating to civil
rights has assumed a major res-
ponsibility for communications
media. It has become a great res-
ponsibility for newspapers, radio
and television broadcasters and
commentators.
A discussion of this new duty is
therefore of great importance and
"Race and the News Media," ed-
ited by Paul L. Fisher and Ralph
L. Lowenstein, published by Praeg-
er (111 4th Ave., N.Y. 3) provides
data of merit not only for the peo-
ple in the communications areas
but for all who are engaged in the
battle for civil rights.
Annual conferences of the Uni-
versity of Missouri Freedom of
Information Center have made
possible gathering of ideas on
the subject by prominent news-
men and the center's eighth an-
nual conference was co-spon-
sored by the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith. The papers
presented at that conference
provided the material for the
current volume, "Race and the
News Media."
Participants in this symposium
included Martin Hayden, Detroit
News editor, editors, publishers,
heads of advertising agencies and
heads of radio stations; as well as
leaders in civil rights movements

of the Freedom of Information
Center advisory committee; Benja-
min F. Holman, assistant director
for media relations of U.S. Com-
munity Relations Service; Henry
Lee Moon, press secretary of the
National Association for the Ad-
vancement of Colored People, and
others.
The introductory essay by the
editors analyzes the needs, sets
the tone for this volume and pro-
poses guidlines: suggesting that

ments with emphasis on the repor-
torial roles, that additional training
be provided for reporters and that
copyreaders be aware of responsi-
bilities in headline writing. Addi-
tional suggestions includes guides
for those preparing the news.
The introduction deplores the
fact that there is a lack of Negro
reporters and states that "the
American press is totally white in
most cities" thus providing a rea-
son for Negro mistrust.
George P. Hunt, managing edi-
tor of Life, pleads for "human
understanding and the ability to
transmit it to the American pub-
lic." Reporting on Detroit's
racial story, Hayden suggests an
end to thinking that all whites
and all blacks think along a corn.
mon line, stating that "obviously
the contrary is true: the philoso-
phy of a Watts rioter is as far
from that of Ralph Bunche or
Martin Luther King as are the
tenets of a night rider with the
Ku Klux Klan and a member of
the Anti-Defamation League."
Holman believes that "the major
battleground will be in the North"
and he advises newsmen that it is
their duty "to unravel and chron-
icle this great struggle."
In relation to Watts it is inter-
esting to note a warning by James
Bassett of the Los Angeles Times
that: "In the absence of enlight-
ened press leadership, the rabble-
rousers may take over. It is a truce
now. It could be war."
"Free discussions on all issues
through better news coverage" is
urged in the essay titled "Were
Broadcasters Color Blind?" by Jo-
seph L. Brechner, president of
WFTV, Orlando, Fla.

The social issues also are thor-
oughly reviewed and the analysis
of the race issue in relation to
news media in this volume presents
valuable guides for abjective action
in establishing proper communica-
tions.
