`Magic Top' Spins
TV Hanuka Tale

"The Magic Top}' a children's
fantasy for Hanuka, will be pre-
sented in color 8:30 a.m. Sunday
on Channel 7 under the sponsor-
ship of the Jewish Community
Council.
Based on a story for children
written at the turn of the century
by Hebrew short story writer
Judah Steinberg and published sub-
sequently in Yiddish, the present
version is an adaptation of the
Hanuka fairy tale, "The Magic
Top," written by Rosalind Welch-
er and published by Panda Prints
of New York. The television ver-
sion was developed for the Jewish
Community Council by William A.
Austin.
The "top," actually an enchanted
Hanuka dreidl, carries the hero, a
little boy named Avrum (played
by Ricky Orbach), on his unsuual
adventure to free Hannah (Sheryl
Silver) and her father, Reb Jonah
(Rollin Parker), from the wicked
and mystically powerful oppressor.
The cast also includes Carol
Chase, Bill Felsenfeld, Mike Good-
man, Laura Levine and George
Perl. Costumes are by Sue Gold-
man, with the cooperation of the
Center Theater of the Jewish Cen-
ter; properties by Mildred Gross-
man; dramatic production by
Evelyn Orbach, and TV direction
by Chuck Snead.

U.S. Children Airlift Toys
to Israel Under NCJW

NEW YORK (JTA)—Twenty-four
school children from 11 American
communities left Dec. 23 on a
Hanuka airlift to Israel to dis-
tribute toys to children there. The
project, an annual one, is spon-
sored by the National Council of
Jewish Women as part of its ship-
a-box program, which also oper-
ates in France, India, Iran, Tunisia
and Yugoslavia.
Mrs. Melvin Stitch, chairman of
the NCJW's national overseas com-
mittee, said that the "child-to-
child airlift" may increase the
bonds between the children of
Israel and America. The American
youngsters personally delivered
toys to two kindergartens in Is-
rael, and turned over the rest to
the ministry of education for dis-
tribution.

Prof. Mirsky also reported that
