fudge Rosenblatt's Recollections
'in Historical U.S• Zionist Record
For more than half a century
lernard A. Rosenblatt played im-
iortant roles in Zionist endeavors
n this country, on the world scene,
is a resident in Eretz Israel.
He was a founder of the Ameri-
an Zion Commonwealth which

v a s among the
architects of the
novement out of Rosenblatt
vhich emerged Balfouria settle-
nent, the city of Herzlia and other
Israeli landmarks.
In his political activities he
rose high as a defender of the
Zionist cause and of Israel. Ile
was active in politics, as an FDR
associate, and as a municipal
judge in New York City he at-
tained a high goal in the judici-
arY-
The recollection of this distin-
luished leader, who served on the
world Zionist executive and who
held the post of national president
of the Jewish National Fund, are
incorporated in a most interesting
account of Jewish and Zionist his
torical events, in the volume
"Two Generations of Zionism, His-
torical Recollections of an Amer-
ican Zionist," published by Shen-
gold Publishers (45 W. 45th, NY
36).
Utilizing the services of an
Israeli editor, Gaalyahu Cornfield.
there are addenda to Rosenblatt's
reminiscences in the form of ap-
pended historical notes. In addi-
tion to these notes, which appear
in this volume in italicized form.
Cornfield also wrote an interesting
introduction evaluating Rosen-
blatt's career.
The major Jewish personalities
who had served the Zionist cause,
American and world figures like
Justice Louis D. Brandeis, Judge
Julian Mask, Rabbi Stephen Wise,
Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver and
scores of others are delineated
here in a record which began in
Rosenblatt's earliest childhood.
when the Herzlian ideal first was
promulgated in the first World
Zionist Congress, to the present
time. Rosen!)Iatt's friendship and
association with these men, as
well as with Dr. Chaim Weizmann
and others, is part of a historic
account that provides significant
data as a history of Zionism.
Many of the intimate details
of Rosenblatt's activities are
especially significant. For in-
stance, his reference to the
turbulant 1921 convention of the
Zionist Organization of America
held in Cleveland, when Weiz-
mann's conflict with Brandeis
led to a split in the movement,
brings to light some of the bit-
terness which later was healed.
Rosenblatt comments in rela-
tion to the Cleveland debates
that a reading of the record
shows deep sincerity on both
sides, in spite of the anger that
was expressed.
The emergence of the Keren
Hayesod. the enrollment of Samuel
Untermyer into activities in behalf
of the Jewish National Home, the
struggles politically, in this coun-
try, with the British, on many
fronts, mark this intimate record
of a dedicated life that was linked
closely with the movement for the
re-establishment of Jewish sover-
eignity in the ancient homeland.
There are many encomia for
Judge Rosenblatt from the noted
Zionist leadets, in appreciation if
what he had done for the United
Palestine Appeal and for the
Zionist movement in general.
His acceptance of Josiah
Wedgwood's idea of making Pale-
tine another British Common-
wealth is an interesting aspect
of one of the passing incidents
in the noted Zionist's career.
Many of Judge Rosenblatt's es-
says, texts of his speeches and nu-
merous documents supplement the
recollections in a volume that is
replete with dramatic episodes.
Cornfeld's annotations have
great merit as supplementary ma-
terial and "Two Generations of
Zionism" emerges as a most meH-
torious work.

Social Security Billas Sop
NEW YORK—The Jewish Labor
Committee, representing 500,000
Jewish liberals and trade unionists,
condemned the conference version
of the Social Security bill as "a
travesty on the meaning of Social
Security" and a "sop for meaning-
ful liberalization of the bill."
Adolph Held, president of the
group, scored the low-minimum
payment level of the bill ($55 a
month versus the 15 per cent voted
by the Senate, the cut in job-train-
ing allowance from $20 a week to
$30 a month and the freeze on the
ratio of children from fatherless
homes who could qualify for wel-
fare.
Held also decried the welfare
provision "encouraging" those on
relief to rmd work but allowing
them to keep only the first $30
a month for outside earnings and
30 per cent of everything over
that.
"This is so small an amount as
rather to encourage people to re-
main on welfare than to find em-
ployment," he said.
The Senate had voted to permit
those on welfare to keep $50 a
month and 50 per cent of anything
over that gained from outside earn-
ings.
Held was also critical of a pro-
vision by which the federal gov-
ernment would reimburse those
states with Medicaid programs only
for benefits paid to families whose
income was at most one-third
above the income level fixed for
those on welfare.

Later, new immigrants were also
brought there direct from the ship.
True, the climate of Eilat is hot in
summer, but it is very mild (comfort-
able) in the winter. Many hotels were
built along the shores of the Red
Sea for the accommodation of the
many tourists who come there from
the Scandinavian countries to become
tanned in the winter sun.
The copper mines of Timna are the
industrial hinterland of Ellat, and are
nearby. Most of the Timna workers
live in Eilat.
Its agricultural hinterland consists
of agricultural settlements established
along the desert tracks, which market
their produce in Eilat.
The port also constitutes one of the
enterprises providing employment. Many
ships come to the Port of Ellat from
Africa and discharge their cargoes.
They say that in Europe one can
find a signboard intended for Israeli
tourists: "Snobs, have you visited Ellat
yet?" Indeed, Eilat's fascinating beau-
ty can compete with the beautiful
tourist places of the world.
