Gift of Ambulance Honors Memory
The name of the late Monty Jacobs, executive director of the
World Jewish Congress of North America, a participant in the Israel
War of Independence, and author of a book on the Israeli air force,
was honored recently by the gift of an ambulance to Magen David
Adorn, Israel's National Red Cross Service, from the New York
Jewish Conference, an organization in which Mr. Jacobs had been
vitally interested. At the dedication ceremony are (from left) Ellis
Belle, officer of the Jewish Conference; Bernard Harkway, chair-
man of the board; Mrs. Adele Jacobs, Mr. Jacobs' widow; Rabbi
Shepherd Z. Baum, president of the conference; and Dr. Charles
Feinberg, director of American Red Mogen Dovid. Mrs. Esther Rosen-
feld, a pioneer in Israel from 1925 to 1931, who was married in Old
Jerusalem to the late Zelig Rosenfeld, also has donated a fully
equipped ambulance for t ransmission to Magen David Adorn.

A rich collection of new books
for young readers, issued by Pan-
theon, Knopf and Random, is head-
ed by a beautifully printed edition

Washington Irving (Pantheon).
Splendidly illustrated with etch-

artists of that period, this volume,

lishers, contains a preface by

youth of our time.
Doris Orgel is re-introduced to
young readers by Pantheon with
her splendid story, "In a Forgotten

work marked by an interesting plot

Thought-Provoking Father-Son
Dialogue in 'Right and Wrong'
Furie's New Film
By HERBERT G. LUFT
(Copyright 1967, JTA Inc.)
HOLLYWOOD—Sidney J. Furie,
the 34-year-old film director who
rose to world recognition in the
cinema with his British-made "The
Iperess File," which introduced
Michael Caine as a Private Eye,
now is preparing one of Holly-
wood's most sensational subject
matters for the screen, "The Shep-
pard Murder Case," based on the
factual account and information
supplied by F. Lee Bailey, the
noted criminal attorney who suc-
cessfully defended the Cleveland
osteopath accused of murdering
his pregnant wife.
Furie, a Toronto-born Jewish
boy, in his early youth traveled
to the United States to study writ-
ing and film directing at Carnegie
Institute of Technology. After win-
ning his diploma, the 21-year-old
returned to Canada and entered
the production of television films.
As Sidney told me during an inter-
view at Paramount Studios, where
he is preparing "The Sheppard
Murder Case" for Bob Evans, he
struggled hard for recognition, bor-
rowing money to make his first
feature, "Dangerous Age," a pic-
ture largely based on his own ex-
perience and completed within a
record ten days, for a total cost of
Dialogues are the order of the
day and when a father and a son
enter into a philosophic discussion
and review world affairs, their ex-
change of views inevitably deserves
serious:attention. '
"Right) and Wrong" is such a
volume. Published by Basic Books
(404 Park S., NY16), it contains
the dialogue between Dr. Paul
Weiss, Sterling Professor of
Philosophy at Yale University, and
his son, Jonathan Weiss, an attor-
ney who also lectures and writes.
One of the questions raised is
whether a child's wishes should be
adhered to. Jonathan asked: "What
about acts which might be con-
sidered as damaging to the child's
self-image—the Mennonites' style
of dress, the children of Jehovah's
who pass out literature, Orthodox
Jewish children who have to wear
skullcaps?"
And the father commented: "As
long as the child has not yet reach-
ed the age of reasonable discretion,
lives at home, and is supported
by the family, he must conform
to the family's mores, values, sense
of decorum, and religious outlook."
There was another question pos-
ed by Jonathan, in relation to the
Negro school problems: "Should a
disadvantaged of a society be given
special privileged in society?"
Paul's reply was:
"I have heard it said that most
of the higher executive positions
in the New York school system
are filled by Jews. The Jews
claim that they have achieved
this dominance through com-
petitive examinations and be-
cause of their intellect and in-
dustry. Some Negro leaders,
however, claim that the Jews
have achieved these positions
through political pull. Other
Negroes say that giving Negroes
jobs on the basis of examina-
tions perpetuates the kind of
$50,000.
At the age of 26, Sidney Furie
went to England to direct "During
One Night," dealing with a young
pilot in World War II, which im-
mediately established him as an
important newcomer. In 1963, Sid-
ney met Raymond Stross who had
made himself a name with the
award-winding Stuart Whitman
film, "The Mark," which had been
photographed in Ireland. Together
with Stross, Furie developed "The
Leather Boys," dealing with the
homosexual relations of two young
men in a very delicate and deeply
moving fashion. The only known
name in the film was Rita Tush-
ingham.
Question: I am a full-time trade
school student studying mechanical
drawing. Can I qualify for a de-
ferment?
Answer: Yes, you may be consid-
ered for a Class 1I-A occupational
deferment.

ideology that made 'it possible
for the Jews to succeed. Instead,
these jobs should be thought of
primarily .is political plums and
given to Negroes in proportion
to their d1stributon in the popu-
lation, I think this question is a
very hard one to resolve. If
administrative jobs in t h e -
schools were purely political
positions, I would agree with the
Negroes who demand their pro-
portionate place. But if these
jobs are intimately involved with
actual education, I think the Ne-
gro must prove himself. The re-
lative criteria of excellence in a
position have to be determined
first, and then he is who is
qualified should be given the
post regardless of anything else.
If a Negro cannot qualify for
one of these positions, we must
not give it to him, for if we
do we will punish the children
who are to be educated under
his supervision. What I am say-
ing about the Negroes would ap-
ply to any kind of subdivision
in our society.
The father-son discussion also
involved pprent-child relationships,
in general and among Jews in par-
ticular; the Jewish mother's pro-
tective attitude in hiding facts
from the father; the child's right
to make up his own mind.
Practically every issue that arises
in modern life is injected in this
discussion,„in the 210-page book,
making "Right and Wrong" a
though-provoking dialogue.
