artist, Miss Kaminska revealed
that during World War II she
appeared in the Soviet Union and
has subsequently performed not
only in Poland but also in
France, England, Israel, Belgium,
Holland, Austria, East Germany,
Australia, Argentina, Uruguay
and Brazil. It was in this con-
nection that she voiced hope of
again being able to perform in
the USSR.
Because of the relatively few
Jews in Warsaw, about 70 per cent
cf Yiddish theater audiences there
are non-Jewish, she' said. They re-
spond sympatheticaly to the artist
but rely to a large extent on sim-
ultaneously translations of the Yid-
dish language. Miss Kaminska com-
mented that she was thriled by
New York audiences because they
showed a warm and immediate
comprehension of Yiddish idiom,

Miss Kaminska's press confer-
ence was arranged by the embassy
of Poland. While in Washington,
she went sightseeing and visited
national shrines including the grave
of President Kennedy.

able to determine the truth of re-
ports that Miss Kaminska signed
an anti-Israel statement recently.)

Socialists Would Raise Public Opinion
for Plight of Jews in Soviet Union
LONDON (JTA) — A campaign
to arouse public opinion over the
plight of 3,000,000 Jews in the
Soviet Union and to stimulate ac-
tion on the humanitarian issues
involved was announced at a meet-
ing of the London bureau of the
Socialist International which closed
here Sunday.
The campaign will be based on a
report by a special working party
on the status of Soviet Jewry which
was adopted by the Socialist Inter-
national at its anntral conference
in Zurich last month.
The meeting also discussed the
Arab-Israel conflict and decided
to forward the international's reso-
lution on that subject to S'ecretary
General U Thant with a request
that he circulate it among all
United Nations members. The reso-
lution expressed "full solidarity
with the people of Israel who are
defending their existence and their
liberty against aggression" and
called for "negotiated peace trea-
ties between Israel and the Arab
states."
Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv a
Herut member of parliament told
a mass meeting for Soviet Jewry
today that it was useless to ap-
peal to the "humanitarian feel-
ings" of Soviet leaders and that
"we must try to force them to
solve the Jewish problem by
opening the gates for Jews."
oppression of Soviet Jewry was to
enable them to migrate to Israel.
Other speakers said that anti-
Jewish tendencies were continuing
in the Soviet Union and that only
pressure and demand from the
whole world would bring about a
change in Soviet attitudes.
They called on public opinion
everywhere to join in the demands
for Soviet Jewry.
