Israel Stand Against Apartheid Oscar Jacobson, 50,
Attorney and CPA
Defended by Envoy at UN

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

UNITED NATIONS — The ques-
tion of apartheid is for Jews "first
and foremost a matter of principle
and of conscience. A fundamental
moral issue," Dr. Joel Barromi,
Israel representative on the spec-
ial political committee of the Gen-
eral Assembly, told the committee
here last week.
He said that Israel's position
on apartheid, the official policy of
racial separation practiced by the
government of South Africa, "rep-
resents the consistent expression
of a basic policy which is a facet
of our impassioned condemnation
of each and every form of racial
discrimination."
Dr. Barromi noted that the Jews
"were the chosen victims of the
abominable monster of racial per-
secution."
"We fought against it and par-
ticipated in its final overthrow,"
he said. "The apartheid regime
affects millions of human be-
ings" and "contradicts the basic
principles enunciated in the char-
ter" of the United Nations
"which calls upon member states
to endeavor to accomplish the
common aims of the organization
and to fulfill in good faith the
solemn obligations they have
assumed."
"Now that I have lived to see
the restoration of the Jews, I
should like to pave the way for
the restoration of the Negroes,"
the Israeli delegate said.
Dr. Barromi's outspoken views
on apartheid have been widely
reported in the Republic of South
Africa, where the press and the
government-owned radio have re-
cently taken angry exception to
such statements by the represen-
tative of a nation — Israel — that
has always enjoyed the sympathy,
good will and support of South
Africa.
South African Jewry, always
deeply committed to Israel and
Zionism, is becoming increasingly
concerned over the growing rift
between the two countries.
Meanwhile, in New York, an
appeal to "the force of world
opinion" to try to prevent the
"certain death by hanging' of
