This repair work Rabbi Eisenbach
does meticulously, using the exact-
ing tools of his trade.
Each item of his trade is spec-
ified in Jewish law and tradition.
The parchment is from a kosher
animal. The ink is made from vege-
tables, coal and oil, and is fre-
quently brought from Israel. Tur-
key quills of different sizes and
shapes are used to write with. The
parchment segments of the scrolls
are sewn together with animal
veins, as is prescribed by Jewish
law.
Children at Akiva Hebrew Day
School saw Rabbi Eisenbach at
work in his white kaftan (robe)
at Young Israel of Oak-Woods.
He has been called "Kasvan
Raba" — master of script — and
"sofer =beer" — a great scribe.
