Broomfield Says Pre-•une 5
Boundaries -31ust Be Redrawn

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

WASHINGTON — Israel's boun-
daries prior to June 5 were "un-
realistic" and should be redrawn
in a general peace settlement to
ensure ''the permanent security
and safety of all the nations con-
cerned," Rep. William S. Broom-
field said Tuesday.
Broomfield, a member of the
House foreign affairs committee,
returned earlier this week from a
trip to Israel.
He said that he was "totally
against Israeli withdrawal" unless
the Arabs agree to recognize the
existence of Israel and accept a
reasonable boundary settlement.
The Michigan congressman felt
that Israel was sincerely determin
ed to resolve the Arab refugee
problem. He noted that this should
not be a "one-way street" but that
the Arab states must cooperate in
resettlement.
He said he would give the mat-
ter of "realistic boundaries" an
equal priority with the refugee
issue.
The congressman made clear his
conviction that the Arabs must re-
cognize Israel and take other steps
to bring about a solution of prob-
lems presently existing in the wake
of the war.

recognized as part of Jordan "even
by the Arabs." He said that within

the framework of a general peace
settlement, Israel would be pre-
pared to come to an agreement to
grant Jordan free passage to the
Mediterranean, to work toward
Arab refugee problem solutions,
and economic developmental co-
operation with Jordan.
The congressmen reported that
Eshkol "would agree that the safe-
guarding of the Islamic holy places
should be in the hands of Jordan."
They were "particularly gratified"
by the Israeli policy to work to-
ward Arab refugee settlement. It
was also their conviction that "Is-
rael will firmly guarantee access
to the holy places of Jerusalem to
all Moslem and Christian pil-
grims."
Rep. Robert Taft, Jr., Ohio Re-
publican, said on his return from
Israel that he saw "a good chance"
for direct negotiations between the
Arabs and Israel but thought it
would take "a little time." He
stressed that the United States
should try to promote direct nego-
tiations. "The results are far more
likely to be lasting than if we seek
a settlement through some inter-
mediary. some international agency
where there is no face-to-face
meeting," he stated.

the _five-year-old Yemen war to
free Egyptian forces there for
joint Arab action in a new round
of fighting against Israel, accord-
ing to Cairo reports received here
Wednesday.
The newspaper Al Ahram of
Cairo said Egypt made the peace

The call was made at the Arab
foreign ministers' conference in
Khartoum, Sudan.
Egypt asked for reactivation of

Rep. Leonard Farbstein, New

Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and

a joint statement that "since
there has been nothing to indi-

general impression is that there
will be no further major changes
