Col. Karni was formerly first

has served as operations officer of
'the general staff of the Israel De-
fense Forces.
A seasoned and celebrated mili-
tary figure, Col. Karni trained as
a commando in the Hagana during
the British mandate and was at-
tached to the settlement police
under the mandatory government.

Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Y. Feld-
man of Chicago announce the en-
gagement of their daughter. Gail
Roberta to Dr. Lawrence Ivan
Berkove, son of Dr. and Mrs.
Harry Berkove of Chicago.
Miss Feldman did undergraduate
work at the University of Michigan
where she graduated with distinc-
tion. She was a member of Gamma
Phi Beta Sorority and Mortar
Board honorary Society. She is
working toward a PhD in a com-
bined program of psychology and
education at the university. Dr.
Berkove, who received his AB de-
gree from the University of Illi-
nois. MA from the University of
Minnesota and PhD from the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania, is an as-
sistant professor of English litera-
ture at the University of Michigan
Dearborn campus.
The couple plan an August
wed ding.

Rise
for Foreign Mail May 1

Postmaster Edward L. Baker re-
minds mailers that increases in
surface atid airmail rates to for-
eign countries will go into effect
May 1.
Baker emphasized that the in-
crease will not apply to mailings
to• members of our armed forces
overseas Domestic rates apply to
such mail, which is addressed to
Al'O's and FPO's.
Also. the postage rate on sur-
face letters to Canada and Mexico
remains 5 cents per ounce. airmail
letters at 8 cents per ounce, sur-
face post cards at 4 cents each, and
air post cards at 6 cents each. To
all other a r eas. the rates will be
increased.

In 1949 he was sent to the
United States on a ministry of de-
fense mission. Upon his return to
Israel, he became chief liaison
officer of the Israel general staff
and was director of public rela-
tions of the ministry of defense
in 1954.

Born in Palestine in 1926, Col.
Karni received his education in
Tel Aviv, where he attended Tech-
nical College and Law School.
Eric Rosenow and his orchestra
will provide the music for the
dancing. The champagne dinner-
dance, which will celebrate Israel's
19th birthday, is sponsored by five
organizations, the majority of
whose members are survivors of
the Nazi holocaust. The sponsoring
organizations are: Shaarit Haplay-
tah, Zionist Revisionists, Work-
men's Circle Branch 227, United
Jewish Social Club and Radomer
Mutual Society of Detroit.
