Was Active Detroiter
Joseph Franovitz, a Detroit resi-
dent for 51 years who was active
in many local organizations, died

of the Crescent Shrine Club.
Born in Hungary, Mr. Fran-
ovitz was self-employed in the
real estate business. He is sur-
vived by his wife, Ida; a daughter,
Mrs. Harold (Loree) Marks; one
sister and four grandchildren.

NEW YORK — Private family
services were held here Wednesday
for Dr. Leon L. Watters, scientist,
teacher and amateur historian of
Judaism, who died Monday at age
89.
Dr. Watters developed the sterile
catgut uniformly used in medical
work while on the staff of Bellevue
Hospital. During World War I, he
designed and built the first port-
able disinfectors for the army and
navy and in World War II, he de-
signed a mobile hospital unit used
by the British in North Africa.
In 1940 he wrote a series of
articles on famous scientists for
the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia.
He was a former president of the
Jewish Welfare Board of New York,
'a former vice president of the He-
brew Technical Institute, and a
former treasurer of the Young
Men's Hebrew Association. In 1962
he was recipient of the distinguish-
ed alumnus award of the Univer-
sity of Utah. He set up several
scholarships and student loan
funds at the university.
He combined his interest In
Judaism and his love for his na-
tive Utah in a book, "Pioneer
Jews of Utah," which was pub-
lished in 1952 by the American
Jewish Historical Society. The
book received an award from the
Jewish Book Council.
In 1934, at the suggestion of lead-
ing scientists who were personal
friends, including Albert Einstein,
he set up a laboratory for atomic
research at the California Institute
of Technology.
Born in Salt Lake City, he re-
ceived his BS degree at the age
of 18. He entered Columbia Univer-
sity in 1897 where he earned a
masters degree. Dr. Watters was
named assistant professor of or-
ganic chemistry in 1899 and re-
ceived his doctorate a year later.
He later served as head of the
Cincinnati University chemistry
department and then returned to
New York to become assistant city
chemist.
Interment was In Salt Lake City.

mother of Joseph G. Weisberg,
executive editor of the Boston
Jewish Advocate, died April 14.
Besides her son she is survived
by her husband, Abraham Weis-

ish Advocate, and her brother, Dr.
Alexander Brin, publisher of the
Advocate. The late Joseph Brin,
co-publisher of the paper, was her
brother.
