Jewish Labor Committee Asks Veto of Group Libel

NEW YORK (JTA) The New
York Jewish Labor Committee and
the National Trade Union Council
for Human Rights urged Gov. Nel-
son Rockefeller to veto a "group
libel" bill that would make it
unlawful to make defamatory state-
ments against religious, ethnic and

charged the bill was "too vague
and sweeping."

New York JLC and Charles S.
Zimmerman, chairman of the
NTUC, issued a statement describ-
ing the bill as "a serious danger

Canadian Zionists
Back Day Schools

TORONTO (JTA) — Canadian
Zionists were urged Wednesday in
a resolution adopted at the found-
ing convention of the Federated
Zionist Organization of Canada to
pursue "a policy of maximum in-
volvement in all phases of Jewish
education."
The 1.000 delegates, in the same
resolution, urged the national ex-
ecutive of the FZOC to call on all
Zionists to extend their "fullest
support" to day schools support-
ing the Zionist movement. The new
national executive also was urged
"to explore every avenue of fi-
nancial support for Jewish day
schools, including that of govern-
ment aid."

In another resolution, the dele-
gates called on the government

of Canada "to make known to
the government of West Ger-
many the anxiety of the Candian
people over the rise of Nazi
sentiment in Germany." The res-
olution also appealed to the
Western powers to prevent West
Germany from "acquiring or
gaining access to and control of
any kind of nuclear weapons."
Another resolution appealed to
Soviety authorities to allow mem-
bers of Jewish families in the
Soviet Union to be reunited with
other members in Israel and other
Countries.
The delegates hailed the observ-
ance of Canada's centennial and
said that "during the past 100
years. Canada has been enriched
by those who have sought to live
within its borders according to
their faith and beliefs."

far as to snub the President of
Israel when he stopped off in India
last year.
For the first time, a high-rank-
ing spokesman of the Indian gov-
ernment last week voiced public
dissatisfaction with the Arabs, cri -
ticizing Arab policy regarding
India-Pakistani relations. Indian
Foreign Minister Mohammed Ali
Chagla asserted that the govern.
ment regrets that "Arab opinion
has not supported India and that
the Arab governments especially
chose to remain neutral during the
Pakistan aggression against India."

In an interview with the chief
editor of the Syrian-Arab News

Agency, Rebriahim Saqr, the
foreign minister told him that on
various occasions some Arab
countries adopted an anti-India
attitude. Chagla pointed out to
the Syrian editor that "India has
supported Arab opinion on the
Palestine issue, and I think on
all Arab issues India has given
full support to Arab countries
such as in the Suez case and the
dispute over the Jordan waters."
He further told the editor that,
on the other hand, while Pakistan
tells the Arabs that it does not
recognize Israel, there is "a flour-
ishing trade between them."
Observers do not believe that
Indian criticism of the Arabs im-
plies a change in attitude towards
Israel, but rather that the Indian
foreign minister's statement indi-
cates that Indian policy towards
Israel is now being utilized by the
foreign minister in order to prevail
upon the Arabs to side with India
in her disputes with Pakistan.
