FLUENT HEBREW

By Philip Birnbaum
FLUENT HEBREW (IVRIT SHOTEFET), Dr. Birnbaum's new
authoritative textbook and guide to a competent command of the
Hebrew language, is designed for students of various ages. It is
bilingual and consists of graded reading material. The Hebrew
text and the translation are printed in parallel columns. The
selections are from the Bible, the Mishnah, the Aggadah, the
Siddur, the Mishneh Torah, and modern Israel newspapers. The
method followed throughout is teaching the Hebrew language
from the point of view of content.
Pre-publication response to FLUENT HEBREW was so enthusi-
astic that a new printing is already on the press.

None, of the signators of the ad-

s ertisement, who included rabbis

and doctors, appeared to be as-
sociated with any of the major
American Orthodox organizations.
However, the advertisement re-
ferred to the protest by Orthodox
groups.
The advertisement asserted that
"in Israel, mass autopsies are be-
ing performed without permission
and despite the expressed objec-
tion of the deceased and their
family. A wave of protest has
engulfed Israel in recent months.
Would you want your close rela-
tive to be dissected after death?"
The advertisement asserted that
many Jews in Israel refuse to
enter hospitals for necessary treat-
ment "because they fear that if
they die, their bodies will be
mutilated," and that many elderly
people were afraid to visit or set-
' tle in Israel "because of what
might happen to them after death."
The advertisement said its spon-
sors did not seek to impose their
will on anyone and stated their
position as a demand "that any-
one, whether out of religious con-
viction or humanitarian feelings,
be legally allowed to insist that
no autopsy or dissection be per-
formed on his—or his relative's—
body after death (granting the ex-
ceptions practiced in the United
States, such as in cases of suspi-
cious deaths or dangerous epi-
demics)."
a
The committee postponed
march to the United Nations sched-
uled for Monday protesting the
forced autopsies. Hertz Frankel,
spokesman for the committee,
stated: "Having received assur-
ances from reliable sources both
here and Israel that effective meas-
ures are being taken to remedy
the situation, the committee is
postponing mass demonstration
pending the outcome of those ef-
forts."

Israel Cabinet Rejects
Proposal to Prosecute
Doctors for Abortions

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel's
cabinet has rejected a proposal
that physicians performing abor-
tions be prosecuted. The proposal
had been made by a special demo-
graphic committee studying Israel's
low birth rate.
The members of the cabinet di-
vided on the issue proposed by the
demographic committee. It was
pointed out that, while both tra-
ditional Jewish law and the laws
of the country prohibit abortions,
physicians in Israel in fact per-
form such procedures openly and
are prosecuted only in cases of
negligence.
A ministerial committee was
authorized by the cabinet to de-
cide on preferential treatment for
families with many children and
for provision of other incentives to
increase the birth rate.

Haifa Mayor Proposes
Five-Day Work Week

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Mayor
Abba Khoushy of Haifa has pro-
posed a five-day work week with
five days' payment in place of Is-
rael's present six-day work week as
a step toward solution of Israel's
current economic slump. He was
speaking at the annual meeting of
the Haifa Chamber of Copmerce.
Replying to an argument that a
cut in wages would decrease de-
mand, he said that excess pro-
duction should be diverted to ex-
port markets.
