the detention camp at Latrun. Rabbi
Maimon at once declared a hunger strike
in protest against his arrest on the
Sabbath. Because of his poor state of
health, the British released him from
detention. The other prisoners contin-
ued to "have a good time" in Latrun
for a long time more.
The arrest of the members of the
Jewish Agency Executive aroused great
consternation in the Jewish community
of Eretz Yisrael. But the truth of the
matter was that it was exactly in that
part of the Black Sabbath operation
that the English failed mainly. Despite
the meticulous preparations, the English
succeeded in arresting only a small num-
ber of the leaders on the Black List,.
Now it may be revealed that two
days before the Black Sabbath, the In-
telligence Service of the HAGANA re-
ceived full information about the opera-
tion. An anonymous English officer
provided the information to the Intelli-
gence Service (not for payment, but out
of genuine friendship for the Jews), and
also furnished details of the intention
of the authorities to arrest three hun-
dred officers of the HAGANA. The
English officer also provided the
HAGANA with the complete list of
names. Thus the organized Jewish com-
munity was able to prepare for the
Black Sabbath operation.
