Nazi Killer's Marriage Arouses Ire of Dutch

LONDON—A hated war criminal
known as the "Hangman of Amers-
foort," 58-year-old former S.S.
Major Josef Johann Kotaelle, has
married a wartime sweetheart
while serving a life sentence in
a Dutch jail for mass murder.
Kotaelle was convicted of atroc-
ities committed while he was sub-
commandant of the Amersfoort
concentration camp near Amster-
dam. He was accused of the mass
murder of 35,000 prisoners and the
deportation of Jews to German
concentration camps, and was des-
cribed as "the most brutal killer
in wartime Holland."
Now he is one of the last three
ex-Nazis still in jail in Holland,
where war criminals are only
allowed out on parole if they are
in serious ill health. The Dutch
authorities kept a secret of the
decision to allow him to marry
until two days before the cere-
mony, which has caused a storm
of controversy throughout Hol-
Iand.
Officials in the Hague have re-
fused to comment on the case,
apart from revealing that the de-
cision to let Kotaelle remarry was
taken by a former minister of jus-
tice, No Samkalden, before his
recent resignation.

`Passion Play' to be Staged
in Paris by German Actor

PARIS (JTA)—A new version
of the Passion Play staged every
10 years by the villagers of the
West German village of Oberam-
mergau will be presented in Paris
at the huge Palace of Sports
Stadium starting Thursday, it was
announced here.
The original version presented in
Oberammergau was assailed last
year by the American Jewish Con-
gress as anti-Semitic. That version
is scheduled for presentation again
in 1970. The play deals with the
trial and crucifixion of Jesus.
The adaption to be shown in
Paris, then in Britain, the United
States and Australia, was pre-
pared by Jacob Blume, a German
actor and director. When plans
were announced last November for
the proposed presentation of the
Blume version in London and other
British cities, a controversy de-
veloped, capped by a formal appeal
by the Board of Deputies of British
Jews to have nothing to do with
the planned presentation.
Blume said in Paris that one
of his parents was Protestant and
one Jewish and that he changed
the Oberammergau version "only
by relating the Holy Scriptures."
Critics said that this statement
did not put the West German actor
on record as saying he had re-
moved elements considered anti-
Semitic.

Several newspapers have criti-
cized the prison ceremony and
questions are to be asked soon in
the Dutch Parliment. On the wed-
ding day Kotaelle's fiance was
smuggled into jail. The marriage
took place in the canteen, and the
local registrar officiated.

CLEVELAND (JTA)—The goal
of the Jewish Welfare Fund Ap-
peal has been set at the record
sum of $6,476,000. This figure was
adopted by the board of trustees
of the Jewish Community Federa-
tion, which approved recommenda-
tions of its budget committee, fol-
lowing presentations by Edward
Ginsberg, committee chairman and
associate general chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal, and Julius
Paris, general chairman of the
Cleveland campaign.
The previous campaign record
was set in 1966, when $6,268,652
was realized. The presentations to
the board stressed the increased
needs of the campaign beneficiary
agencies and institutions, both
here and overseas, and rising costs
of services. Official dates of the
campaign are April 20- May 18.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Cabi-
net Monday approved a bill pro-
viding for the exemption of pros-
pective immigrants building homes
in Israel from the payment of
luxury tax on dwellings exceeding
125 square meters in area.
Also exempt from the luxury tax
under the terms of the bill will be
immigrants who build dwellings
within three years after their ar-
rival in the country.
The final draft of the bill is now
being drawn up by the interior
ministry and will then be intro-
duced into the Knesset, Israel's
parliament.

Soviet Union Expels
7 Israelis for 'Spying'

WASHINGTON — The Soviet
Union was reported by "Izvestia,"
government newspaper, Wednes-
day as having expelled seven Is-
raeli citizens for alleged "espion-
age" activities.
Izvestia also indicated that three
other Israeli citizens were expelled
after allegedly coming to the USSR
"in the guise of tourists" to spread
Zionist propaganda and engage in
espionage with alleged connivance
of the Israel Embassy.
The newspaper did not say when
the alleged acts took place.
An Israel Embassy spokes-
man told the press in Moscow
that he knew of no recent cases
of expulsion of Israeli tourists
and was not familiar with the
cases cited by Izvestia.
The spokesman said "It is an
entirely unbiased allegation." He
referred to the Izvestia charge
that the Israel Embassy issued
propaganda material to Israeli
tourists for distribution among
Russian Jews.
Second Secretary Efraim Paz
was charged by Izvestia with hand-
ing out such propaganda to tour-
ist Dahan Maatsia. Paz refused to
comment on such reports. He
would not say whether he knew
Maatsia.

The bill has the dual purpose
of encouraging immigration from
affluent countries and of reliev-
ing the slack in the building
trade. The luxury tax ranges
from 54 pounds ($18) to 210
pounds ($70) a square meter.
At a press conference following
the cabinet meeting, the cabinet
secretary declined to answer a
question as to whether the exemp-
tion will be available only to those
officially registered as immigrants
or will also be available to those
bona fide immigrants who prefer
to retain their status as temporary
residents.

Miami Court Acts on Ship

to Be Sold at Auction

MIAMI (JTA) — A federal
judge has given the Somerfin Ltd.
20 days to file replies to suits
filed by 30 creditors against one of
its cruise ships, the Nili, which
has been tied up here since Nov.
18.
The Israel government, which
has made substantial loans to the
Geneva-based Israeli ship company,
filed suit in federal court here
to foreclose on the Nili on an
$8,000,000 mortgage. The ship is
scheduled to be sold at public
auction Jan. 30. Israel is expected
to be the high bidder to protect
its mortgage. After the ship was
seized, eight other claims were
filed against it.

John Straley has a neigh- 12

meant. She answered, 'Sure. It's any time both my parents are
out.' She also exhibits a strange habit when nineteen-year-old
boys appear at the back door to deliver groceries. She sends back
the groceries but keeps the delivery boys."

MARK TWAIN, like many other famous humorists, had
in-moments of absolute despair and had to contend with a
long series of personal misfortunes. Here are a few of the
more cynical Twain pro-

noble, but to show others
how to be good is nobler
—and a good deal less
trouble." .. . "Ii 'you pick
