Abel Sobel, 81; Was
Saginaw Clothier

Abel Sobel, retired Saginaw re-
tail clothier, died at his Oak Park
home, 15140 James, Dec. 22. Mr.
Sobel, 81, started his business,
Sobel Brothers, in 1912 and re-
tired in 1945. He was an Oak Park
resident the past seven years.
Mr. Sobel was a life member of
Pioneer Lodge, F&AM„ in Saginaw
and was a charter member of
Temple Beth El there. As an area
resident, he belonged to Temple
Emanu-EL
He had an extensive knowledge
of designing and was noted for
his alterations, bringing customers
from towns and cities miles away.
He started the business with his
brother, Philip. A 25-year employe
of his, Mrs. Leona Chereton, had
been caring for Mr. Sobel the
past 51/2 years.
Mr. Sobel, whose wife Hazel
died in 1959, leaves a sister, Mrs.
Clara Lichtenstein of New York.

Meyer Hochberg, 74;
Owned Custom Shop

Meyer Hochberg, owner of the
Custom Shop shirtmakers down-
town, for 12 years before retiring
in 1959, died Monday at age 74.
Mr. Hochberg, a member of Lac-
howitcher and Korostichever aid
societies, was a Detroit resident 53
years.
He leaves his wife, Nellie; two
sons, Sidney of Grand Rapids and
Morris; a daughter, Mrs. Louis
(Evelyn) Brant; four brothers,
Sam, George of Clarkson, and Mor-
ris and Eddie, both of New York;
two sisters, Mrs.
M Lillian Friedman
of New York and Mrs. Rose Sil-
berstein of Los Angeles; five grand-
children and one great-grandchild.

Margolis, owner of Margolis Fur-
niture Co., died Wednesday at age
75.
Mrs. Margolis, 19916 Robson,
was a charter member of Temple
Israel and a life member of Ha-
dassah. She also belonged to the
Jewish National Fund Auxiliary,
United Hebrew Schools, American
Jewish Congress, Bnai Brith and
Brith Sholom Society. She served
on the boards of the Louis Mar-
golis Scholarship Fund and Hillel
Day School Scholarship Fund.
Born in Russia, Mrs. Margolis
lived in Detroit 55 years.
She leaves four sons, Irwin,
Herbert, Nathan and Arnold; two
daughters, Mrs. George (Rose)

Zalman and Mrs, Max (Sylvia)
Garland; two sisters, Mrs. William
(Zelda) Aronovitz and Mrs. Sam
(Goldie) Sigman; 14 grandchildren

NEW YORK (JTA)-The death
of Rabbi Nathan Nute Alevsky,

Dr. Morris Burstein, Detroit
physician for 35 years, died Tues-
d ay at age 66.
Dr. Burstein, who had offices at
2950 W. Grand Blvd., was a 1923
graduate of Wayne State Univer-
sity and was a member of the
M ichig an
W ayne County,
American Medical societies, Amer-
ican Academy of General Practice
and Phi Delta Epsilon medical
fraternity.
A member of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, Dr. Burstein was former
president of its men's club. He
lived at 19195 Berkeley.
He leaves his wife, Jean; a
daughter, Mrs. Martin (Merle)
Benson; two brothers, Drs. Harry
and Marvin; and three grandchil-
dren.

LONDON (JTA)-Leon Lerman,

a Soviet Yiddish writer and one of
the contributors to the now defunct
Moscow Yiddish daily, "Emes," has
died in the Soviet Union in his 70s.
During the Stalin purges which
began in the late 1940s, Mr. Ler-
man was arrested and exiled. He
returned to Moscow in the early
1950s, a broken man.
