The American Jewish Congress
says in a year - end report on
church - state relations that the
growing number of lawsuits chal-
lenging government aid to secta-
rian schools had made the issue
"t h e outstanding constitutional
question now facing the nation."
Howard M. Squadron, chairman
of the AJC's commission on law
and social action, made the report
in issuing the organization's final
litigation docket for the year.
The docket describes 32 pending
lawsuits in federal and state courts
dealing with constitutional issues
of religious liberty and separation
of church and state.
Two of these are in Michigan.
One is a suit for a rehearing in
Ingham County `Lansink) Circuit
Court of a complaint that the 1963
state law authorizing the busing of
parochial school pupils violates the
federal and state constitutions.

The other is a suit in Detroit
to invalidate a 1965 state law
requiring that whatever "auxilia-
ry services" are provided to pub-
lic school children must be fur-
nished on an "equal basis" to
children attending nonpublic
schools.
Squadron said the number of

cases (18) in the area of public
funds to church and synagogue
schools reflected "intense contro-
versy among educators, public of-
ficials, religious bodies and other
community groups. The issue im-
peratively demands consideration
and final decision by the U.S. Su-
preme Coure."

toward thes overseas vocational
training program of ORT the

The grant will help finance tech-
nical education and economic re-
habilitation services of ORT in
Europe, Israel. North Africa, Iran
and India. More than 50,000 per-
sons are expected to receive such
assistance in these and other areas
during the coming year.
