Rabbi Saul E. White of Cong.
Beth Sholom. San Francisco. writes
in the Jewish Digest:
The American Jewish commu-
nity is in serious trouble. It has
chosen to define itself as one of the
three major religious bodies of the

country. yet all polls indicate that

it has little regard for religion and

very important.

"Some years ago, T. S. Eliot.,
the great English poet and essay-
ist. while lecturing at the Uni-
versity of Virginia, made the
statement that a large number

of free thinking Jews in a coun-
try is undesirable. His statement
caused chagrin and bitterness in
intellectual circles.
"Eliot was consistent in his point
of view In a learned treatise en-
titled The Idea of a Christian So-
ciey. he argued for the necessity of
man in public life or position of
authority and prestige to maintain
a !History of reverence and com-
mitment to the Christian way of
life.
••To is sure. we are living in an
age of the shaking of the founda-
tions. but for the Jewish com-
munity to set so rapid a pace in
its flight from religious commit-
ment and identification. spells dan-
ger to our survival and what is
almost as distressing to our re-

spected position as one of the three
major religious bodies of the.coun-

trY.

"How much longer can we he
taken seriously as a religious.eorn-
triunity. when our intellectual, so-
cial and philanthropic elite make

to the synagogue
or their religious heritage, and our
masses are indifferent?"

services among Jews in negligible.
"A Gallup poll indicates that 15
per cent of Jews attend Sabbath
services regularly. From my point
of view, this is a high estimate. In
San Francisco. a 10 per cent at-
tendance would crowd our syna-
gogues.
"Recently Catholics. Protestants
and Jew - were polled whether re-
ligion is very important to them.
90 per cen! of the Catholics an-
