Hebrew Corner

Chern illovsky

Shaul Chernihovsky was born in (the
ear) 1895 in a village on the Crimean ,
Peninsula. Ile began to learn Russian
at the age of five; Hebrew, at seven. ,
He did not go to a "'leder. - Instead of
learning pages of the Talmud. he learn-
ed the stories of the Bible.
While studying in Odessa. he became
acquainted with a Greek girl. He read •
Greek literature and wrote poetry in the
classical style. He read a great deal of •
classical literature and began to trans-
late it into Hebrew.
Ile was not admitted to a university
in Russia because he was a Jew. and
therefore went to Germany to study
medicine. Ile practiced as a physician
and during the First World War served
in the Russian Army. In his free time.
the physician became a man of letters.
He translated the Iliad and the Odyssey
from Greek into Hebrew. and he trans-
lated the epic Kalevala from Finnish
onto Hebrew.
•h•rnihovsky immigrated to this coun-
try in (the year) 1931. He continued to
lead a double life in this country, the
life of a physician and that of a poet- ,
translator. Ile uorked as a physician in i
the schools of Tel Aviv, and at the
same time composed and translated
poetry. Ile passed away during Sukkot
(Pentecost). 5704 ( VW).
Chernihovsky. who was a handsome
man, wrote about beauty, love, and
nature. He called upon the Jews to find
a bridge to European culture. Ile ad-
mired historic events of the past. Many
young people were therefore drawn
to him. Rut he also had many opponents.
who called him the "young Greek."
•hernihovsky introduced European
forms into Hebrew poetry (the sonnet.
ballad. and idyl). His translations from
ancient literature (he also translated the
(.ilgamesh Epic and Oedipus the King)
served to link the Hebrew reader with
European culture.

of Djerba from the time of the
