Michigan Safety
Sabbath Weekend
to be Nov. 18-20
Michigan's annual state-wide ap-
peal for moral responsibility on
the highway, Safety Sabbath Week-
end, will be observed Nov. 18-20.
Major faiths, the National Safe-
ty Council and private organiza-
tions have responded to the Michi-
gan State Safety Commission, spon-
sors of the pre-holiday observance.
Marking 11 years of continuing
promotion, Safety Sabbath seeks
to carry the moral issue of traffic
safety to Michigan's citizens of all
faiths as they worship the weekend
before Thanksgiving.
Governor George Romney, in
issuing a formal proclamation
designating the weekend, said:
"The Commandment 'Thou Shalt
Not Kill' is present in one form
or another in every one of the
great moral religions civilized man
has struggled to live by. We need
to reapply this great Command-
ment to life on our modern high-
ways. In the hope and belief that
this is possible, I urge the cooper-
ation of all our people—and partic-
ularly the clergy — in a Safety
Sabbath Weekend dedicated to
our reorientation toward that
greatly desirable goal."
Support material distributed by
the State Safety Commission will
be made available to clergy, lay
leaders and local sefety organi-
zations.
