The Best of Everything
By Danny Raskin
A local landmark of many years
is Samuels Brothers Cafeteria;
2493 Russell at the corner of Win-
der in Detroit's Eastern Market
. . . Morris Samuels, who has been
at this location for almost 40 years,
now operates the restaurant with
his son, Ira ... The colorful East-
ern Market is a beehive of activity
from the pre-dawn hours until late
afternoon, and Samuels Brothers
Cafeteria is one of the most pop-
ular eating places in the market
. . . The restaurant opens at 3 a.m.
to accommodate the farmers and
food buyers who arrive early, and
EVERY
WEDNESDAY
IS 49er DAY

MONDAY, JUNE 13th
From 9 P.M. to 1 A.M.
Plenty of
floor
space for
dancing
dues a bristling breakfast and lun-
cheon business . . . It is not un-
common to see people eating steaks
and chops at 7 a.m. because that's
actually lunch time for most of
them. . . Samuel Brothers Cafeter-
ia is one of the few places remain-
ing in the Detroit area where a
person can obtain some of the
old-style specialty Jewish foods .. .
These include gefilte fish, schmaltz
herring, schav borsht, mandelbroit
and many others . . . The restau-
rant also features unusually large
portions, lean corned beef sand-
wiches . . . It also has beer and
wine, plus a complete line of carry-
out items . . . The restaurant is
currently undergoing a redecor-
ation plus addition of new equip-
ment, to meet the future need of
both old and new customers.
As of June 13, Kory's Restaurant
and Ice Cream Parlor en Green-
field and 10 Mile, will give up its
"closed mondays" bit and stay
open on their former rest day.
A shrewd restaurateur in Mil-
waukee has plastered a huge sign
on his window proclaiming "T-
Bone, 25 cents!" . . . When you
get close enough to read the small
print, however, you note this res-
ervation, "with meat, Four-Fifty."
His last name is Bricolas, but
everybody knows him as Zois
Sero . . . Took over Laikon Cafe
on Monroe about five months ago,
and is doing a bang-up job serving
Greek and Oriental food . . . As
we've mentioned before, the Greek
food at Laikon Cafe is most auth-
entic, and with Zois at the helm,
its even better than before! . .
Reason why folks don't know his
real name is because he has Sero's
restaurant on Griswold with broth-
ers George and Steve, so people
naturally take it for granted that's
his name.
Latest rage out of Atlantic City
and hitting Detroit, is the Poolside
Sub Party . . . with catering from
the Super Sub Shop on W. '7 Mile
Rd. . . Dancing in the moonlight
by shimmering waters and eating
one of 25 varieties of submarine
sandwiches . . . Sounds good!
`Khartoum' to Premiere
at Music Hall Theater
"Khartoum," Julian Blaustein's
Cinerama production staring Charl-
ton Heston, Laurence Olivie r,
Richard Johnson and Ralph Rich-
ardson, will have its red-carpet
premier at the Cinerama Music
Hall Theater 8:30 p.m. June 22.
A stirring adventure centered
around one of England's greatest
heroes, "Khartoum," a United
Artists release, is the story of
the historic defense of the Nile
City of Khartoum by General
Charles Gordon against thousands
of fanatical dervishes led by the
Arab warrior priest, the Mandi.
Heston plays General Gordon,
Laurence Olivier the Mandi.

LONDON (ZINS) —Barring the
overthrow of the present Syrian
government in a new putsch, it is
possible that Syria may proclaim
itself a "people's democracy,' fol-
lowing the pattern of Hungary,
Romania and Poland.
This is the view prevailing in
circles close to the British .For-
eign Ministry. It is their opinion
that the strongly worded note
which Moscow sent Israel warning
against "meddling" in Syrian af-
fairs, is a result of a Soviet-Syrian
agreement whereby Syria is to join
the Communist bloc.
