criticism and it has been resented
for the manner in which he ap-
proaches Jewish issues and treats
Jewish movements. Now he has an-
other tale, also written to attract
attention among Jews by its title
"Matzohball." Published by Pocket
Books (630 Fifth, NY20), it is sub-
titled "A New Adventure of He-
brew Secret Agent Oy-Oy-7."
It may give a thrill to many
readers, but the fact is that if
"pizza pie" were substituted for
"matzohball" the story wouldn't
change, except that the author
would have to learn some Italian
slang terms. His Jewish terms in
no sense add to scholarship. Many
of them could stand editing, some
are corruptions, and he hardly
thrills those who have a knowledge
of correct Yiddish and Hebrew.
For example, to him meah shearim
means people not a location.
He also utilizes Russian. He
speaks about an "Ivriski Shipon"
—a Hebrew spy—and one wonders
whether the misspelling of Yev-
reisky or the use of a shipon makes
a thriller so thrilling.
Weinstein has written gags for

Jackie Kannon, Mark Russell and
others. He is clever and his wit is

J. J. CLARKE STUDIO
Leonard Gordon, Michigan area
director of the American Jewish
Committee, will receive his Ph.D.
degree at t h e
Wayne State Uni-
versitycorn-
mencement ex-
ercises in Cobo
Hall June 9. His
area of speciali- I
zation is educa-
tional sociology. O
His doctoral dis-
sertation is en-
ti t le d: "An
Accultura-
Gordon
tion Analysis of Negro and White
High School Students:"
The dissertation study took
place over a four-year period in
the three secondary schools of
Oak Park. Analyzed in depth were
the effects of academic behavior
and social interrelationships among
the white and Ne gr o students since
the advent of desegregation in the
Oak Park schools in 1961. One
major finding was that white stu-
dent academic achievement con-
tinued at the generally high levels
attained prior to the introduction N
of the Negro students.
Gordon noted that the social
distance between the two groups
of students was generally wide and
that this factor has resulted in a
number of underlying tensions be-
tween the students.
Previously an instructor in the
sociology department at Wayne
State University, Gordon served as
community affairs associate of the
Jewish Community Council and as
a history teacher at the Oak Park
High Schaal. He received his M.A.
from the University of Michigan
in 1958 and B.A. from Wayne in
1957. Born and raised in Detroit,
Gordon resides in northwest De-
troit with his wife Rena and three
children..
