Adenauer Warns Israeli Hosts:
Don't ignore German Good Will

JERUSALEM — Former We;t
German Chancellor Konrad Ade-
nauer, making his first visit to Is-
rael, sharply warned Premier Levi
Eshkol Tuesday night that, if the
Jewish people failed to recognize
the good will of the post-war Ger-
man nation, - Nothing good can
come of it."
The visiting West German lead-
er's statement was made at a din-
ner given him by Premier Eshkol
and was in reply to a speech by
the Premier asserting that German-
Israeli relations could not be nor-
mal because of the Nazi destruc-
tion of European Jewry.
The premier told the visiting
German leader that "We have not
forgotten and we shall never for-
get the terrible holocaust in which
we lost 6,000,000 of our people..
German-Israeli relations cannot be
normal relations. The Jewish peo-
ple expects from Germany recog-
nition of the special load which
Germany is carrying from the past
in its desire to be reaccepted in
the family of nations." The pre-
mier added that the reparations
agreement which West Germany
accepted "was only symbolic and
cannot erase the tragedy which
occurred."
The annoyed visitor retorted

umentation of the Nazi holocaust.

camps."
Dr. Adenauer was not taken
into the cellar, currently under re-
pair, but only to the crypt of sou-
venirs. There, standing practically
alone in the center of a huge floor
on which are inscribed the names
of the Nazi death camps, he

Weizmann Institute, and members
of the institute's scientific council.
Hundreds of guests and newsmen
were present to witness the first
public appearance of the former
West German chancellor in the
Jewish State.
"I wish to express the desire
that people from every nation of
the world should come to see Is-
rael as an example of faith in
humanity," Dr. Adenauer stated.
"Israel, through' its strength and
power must be and deserves to

Eban, who spoke in his dual
capacity as foreign minister and
Weizmann Institute president,
paid tribute to Dr. Adenauer as
a man who accepted and under-
stood his responsibility for the
past. "We asked ourselves:
Would all responsibility for the
catastrophe be avoided as in pre-
vious historic tragedies, or would
something be done to express the
continuing subjection of men
and nations to the dictates of
their history?" Eban stated: "Dr.
Adenauer accepted this responsi-
bility, though the facts them-

many Germans as it did Jews."

the Nazi regime.
Prior to the dinner, Dr. Ade-
nauer called on Premier Eshkol
for a talk during which he pledged
West Germany's support to the
Jewish people and Israel. The
meeting, held in the premier's of-
fice, was described as cordial and
relaxed. Both men talked infor-
mally and without a prepared

agenda..
It was reported that Dr. Ade-
nauer assured Eshkol that West
Germany would give fullest sup-
port to Israel and of his desire
that this support be extended at
all international levels. Dr. Ade-
nauer made special mention of
West German support for Israel's
efforts to attain a more effective
link with the European Common
Market than its present limited
access.
Dr. Adenauer also told the pre-

mier that, when he had been
chancellor, he regarded a recon-
ciliation between Germany and the
Jewish people as one of the major
problems facing Germany.
Premier Eshkol in turn paid
tibute to Dr. Adenauer's stand for
reparations to Israel but stressed
that reparations alone could not
atone for Nazism's crimes. It was
learned reliably that no mention
was made of the 1960 meeting in
New York City between Dr. Ade-
nauer and then-Premier David
Ben-Gurion.
Israeli officials insist that Dr.
Adenauer then pledged $500,000,-
000 in aid to Israel when repara-
tions payments were completed.
Those payments were finished this

year.

Dr. Adenauer seemed deeply af-
fected as the citation was read,
first in Hebrew and then in Eng-
lish. The audience burst into loud
applause. Earlier, Dr. Adenauer
visited the institute and called on
Dr. Vera Weizmann, with whom
he recalled "the early days" when
she and the late president were
married in Germany.
In the afternoon, Dr. Adenauer
traveled to Jerusalem to confer
with Premier Levi Eshkol and to
be the guest at a private party at
the premier's home.

Two of the political parties
that are members of Israel's gov-
ernment coalition, Mapam and
Adhut Avodah; as well as Herut,
are boycotting the Adenauer
visit. Herut published in Mon-
day's newspapers a manifesto de-
claring that Dr. Adenauer is
"unwelcome" in Israel.

Thousands 'of pamphlets were
distributed by the Ghetto Fighters
Association, protesting the visit
and inviting Dr. Adenauer to
"leave Israel together with Wehr-
macht Officer Pauls and former
Nazi Toeroek." The names refer
to Dr. Rolf Pauls, West German
ambassador to Israel, and Dr. Alex-
ander Toeroek, the West German
embassy's top counselor in Israel.
Many West German journalists
accompanied Dr. Adenauer to
cover the visit. West German tele-
vision sent - a special crew to film
Dr. Adenauer's visit and will pre-
pare a special program for West
German television audiences.

The current issue of neo-Nazi
National-Und-Soldaten Zeitung
denounces Adenauer's "secret
treaty with Israel" and the pay-
ment in restitution funds of
"$2,000,000 from the pockets of
the German taxpayer."
The newspaper, which has been

widely and severely criticized in
West Germany tries to give the
impression that West German pay-
ments to Israel were "gratuitous
presents" and is violently opposed
to any West German aid to Israel
in the future.
At a mass meeting in Bremen
of the neo-Nazi National Demo-
cratic Party, vice chairman Adolf
Von 'Madden criticized Chancellor
Ludwig Erhard for supporting West
German aid to Israel, accused the
United States of allowing commu-
nism to triumph in Asia and as-
sailed the Social Democratic Party.
As the speech proceeded, the boo-
ing and applauding became , so
