Rabbi Donin Indicates Daylight
Saving Inconveniences, Starts
Drive Against Implementation

Serious objections to the intro-
duction into Michigan in 1967 of
Daylight Saving Time was voiced
by Rabbi Hayim Donin of Congre-
gation Bnai David, Southfield, at
the Midwest regional conference
of the Rabbinical Council of
America held in Detroit this week.
A resolution urging the Michigan
legislature and those of other
states in the same longitude to
exempt the state from the Federal
law recently passed by Congress
was introduced by Rabbi Donin
and passed by the conference dele-
gates.
"Detroit was for a time in the
Central time zone, in which case
Daylight Saving Time would not
have been objectionable," Rabbi
Donin said. "It was only to avoid
DST that the City Council in May
1915 placed Detroit on Eastern
time the year round. We thus al-
ready have an extra measure of
daylight (about 40 minutes). Add-
ing still another hour to it is al-
ready a matter of having too much
of a good thing. Aside from per-
sonal objections some of us may
have, for observant Jews and the
Jewish community Daylight Sav-
ing Time in this area would pro-
vide tremendous inconveniences
and undue hardships.
"Being on the western end of the
Eastern Time zone, the sun al-
ready sets here about 40 minutes

six (6) months out of the year.
"The latter would not only seri-
ously affect the kosher catering
industry, but also the flexibility
for planning religious and social
functions. This is not a religious
question, but it is a question of in-
conveniencing our community. The
airlines have lobbied to pass this
through Congress for their sched-

oppose it in Michigan for the con-
venience of the people of Michigan
for reasons no less significant."
