opened campaign headquarters at
4754 Woodward for the May 9
education election which offers
Detroiters an educational program
from kindergarten through com-
munity college — and community
colleges for 37 other school dis-

The education drive seeks voters
for:
• Five community colleges in
Wayne County—with three pro-
posed for Detroit—at a cost of
1 1/4 mills.
• A 2 1/2 mill increase for De-
troiters to enable the Detroit
Public School system to main-
tain current levels of elemen-
tary and secondary education.
Galvanizing a community effort
in behalf of the campaign are
Chairman Roy L. Stephens, Jr.,
and Co-Chairman Leonard Wood-
cock.
Mrs. Thelma Zwerdling is serv-
ing as coordinator for Citizens for
Education.
David Lebenbom, attorney and
chairman of the Wayne County
Democratic Committee, is an ac-
tive committee member.

The ROBERT SHAW CHORALE
and ORCHESTRA will make its
first Detroit appearance in four
years at Masonic Temple Audi-
torium, Sunday, May 1, at 8:20 p.m.
According to Shaw, the Detroit
performance will offer listeners
a chance to hear Handel's master-
piece, "Messiah," as it was ori-
ginally written for a small choral
group and orchestra. Traditional-
ly, the work is now performed
with enormous choirs and large
orchestras. The producers are Sam
Berger, Joseph Shulman and Rich-
ard Hendin.
