his living as a

He also became
Cottler
a fervent Zionist.
In 1913, he left Russia and came
to Canada. On May 18, 1916, almost

exactly half a century ago, he ar-
rived in Detroit.
A few months after his arrival
here, young Norman joined the
Jewish Legion, one of a group of
nearly 30 Detroiters, and was sent
to York Redoubt, off Halifax, N.S.
for training. Among his fellow
Legionnaires were Gershon Avru-
nin, Nate Linden and Alfred Bou-
nin. •
From Nova Scotia, the recruits
were sent to England, then to
Italy and Egypt. After three
months in Egypt, the Legion-
naires were dispatched to Pale-
stine where they served in Gen.
Allenby's army. Vladimir Jabo-
tinsky was a captain of their out-
fit, and Cottler served with Da-
vid Ben-Gurion and Itzhak Ben
Zvi.
In 1930, Cottler opened a fruit
stand at Dexter and Davison. This
fruit stand grew into . the first of
the Dexter-Davison Markets.
Cottler's son "Ruby" and his son-
in-law, Bernard Cohen, husband of
his daughter Sylvia, are in the bus-
iness with him. Norman has five
