Babbitt's Charming
Story of Magicians

Samuel F. Babbitt wrote the
story and his wife Natalie Babbitt
drew the pictures for "The Forty-
Ninth Magician" which has been
published by Pantheon Books.
It is a story full of charm—
about a king with one magician,
whose ranks grow to two and three
and then to 49. From the 49th,
the king learns how to spend time
leisurely, how to make hours dis-
appear into Minutes, minutes into
seconds. . . .
At first there is the problem of
what to do with 49 magicians. But
the youngest, the 49th, teaches the
king the lesson of life and he be-
comes his first magician.
All of its develops into a tale
youngsters will love immensely.

JERUSALEM — Israel's supreme
court was asked Tuesday to hand
down a declaratory judgment on
the personal status of a Jewish
woman who married a gentile in
a civil ceremony abroad and was
then abandoned by her husband.
The rabbinical court in Haifa
rejected her application for a
divorce although she had a signed
agreement to the divorce from
her husband. The court held it
was not competent to rule on a
divorce between a Christian and
a Jewess.
The woman then appealed to the
civil district court, asking for a
declaratory judgment, but that
court declined to act on grounds
that international law required
civil courts not to question the
validity of acts properly per-
formed under laws of another
state.
In her appeal to the civil court,
the woman pointed out she had
not been married under Jewish
religious law, leaving her in a
legal no-man's-land. The supreme
court said it would begin a hear-
ing on the matter April 26.
