Passover's Honored Guest

fare of thunder and roaring fire,
God told Elijah in a "still, small
voice" to be patient; that his will
would be done in good time and
through strange messengers.
Elijah took the message to mean
that his own mission was ended
and the time had come to replace
violent, scathing accusations with
tactfulness and mercy. He had stir-
red the conscience of his people
but the task of purging Israel was
to be carried on by another.
Elijah chose as his successor the
diplomatic Elisha who combined
devotion to Jehovah with a plea-
sant manner. And one day as he
was talking to Elisha the fire that
had been the prophet's tongue,
identity and symbol came in the
form of a chariot and carried Eli-
jah to heaven.
There is, then, little in common,
between the harsh, fiery and fana-
tic Elijah of the Bible and the
mellow, compassionate and wise
Eliyahu Hanavi of legend, song
and folklore. The Jewish imagina-
tion, nourished by centuries of
persecution and wretchedness,
found comfort in a legendary Eli-
jah who was the counsel of the
wise, friend of the poor and the
just, enigmatic and ubiquitous
companion of the messiah.
Legends adorned and embell-
ished by centuries of handed down
folklore and mysticism are common
to any culture and we usually as-
sociate them with the simple, un-
educated people of a nation. But
in the case of Elijah we can trace
them directly to the rabbis of the
Midrash. It was here that the trans-
formation of Elijah, from the aus-
tere figure of the Bible to the kind-
ly "patron saint" of Jewish life,
began.

The prophet Elijah, the unseen
guest at every seder, is, as one
scholar once said: "the closest
thing we Jews have to a patron
saint."
There are really two Elijahs. One
is the Prophet of the Bible and the
other is the harbinger of salvation,
the creation of legends and folk-
lore and the result of centuries of
yearning for the Messiah.
Of the biblical character, we
know that Elijah was a prophet
during the reign of King Ahab who
came from the land East of the
Jordan River, possibly from Gil-
ead. We see him as a fearsome,
awe-inspiring figure who dared to
defy Jezebel and the pagan priests
of Baal. He is described as a sav-
age force from the desert, wild
eyed and shaggy who rose up to
deliver God's curse against Ahab
and Israel in language edged with
fire.
We know that after pronouncing
the awful drought he fled to the
arid wastes to escape Jezebel's
vengeance. After suffering in the
desert where he was hounded by
outraged monarchs in league with
Ahab, Elijah returned to stage the
chief event of his life. He called
for a decisive contest between the
God of Israel and the Baalim of
Sidon in these words: "Enough of
halting on both knees. If the Lord
be God follow him; but if Baal,
follow him."
According to the Bible the trial
of strength took place on the quiet
slopes of Mt. Cannel. An offering
was placed on an altar and the
priests of Baal writhed, prayed
and beseeched their god to send a
consuming fire down from the
heavens to prove his power and

perament.
.."Rabbi Baroka was walking
with Elijah through a busy and
crowded street and asked him:
`Who of all who live here will
inherit Paradise?' After a mom-
ent's thought Elijah pointed to
two jesters and said: 'Eternal
happiness will be theirs despite
the fact that they are unlettered
and unknown for they help to
dissipate the sorrows of men.' "

Then Elijah, after taunting the
false prophet s, called on
Jehovah, the God of the wilder-
ness, and at once the offering
was consumed. Then the great
drought with which Israel had
been punished with years be-
fore came to an end.

Once again the lonely, stern
Elijah had to retreat to the desert
to escape the fury of Jezebel whose
followers he had destroyed. In the
end of the biblical account Elijah,
wretched and exhausted; sick in
body and soul, prayed to God for
the rest and peace of death.
Then he had the vision of God
in the cave of Moses. After a fan-

one he tells a learned rabbi to

his capacity so that if he becomes
angry there will be room in his

other we are told that if a man

ting, Elijah kisses him and God
regards the man with affection.

Most often Elijah is depicted as
the messenger of salvation and
hope whose ways are mysterious
but just. Of great importance is
his role as companion and even
