What is the derivation of the
name Pesach?
A number of explanations have
been given for the derivation of
this word by which the Jewish
Festival of Freedom is called.
Some trace this word to a Hebrew
root meaning to "limp." One who
"limps" actually skips over his
steps and so it has been claimed
that the word Pesach means to
Pass over and the indication is
that the Almighty "passed over"
the Jewish homes when he deliver.
ed the plagues in Egypt. Others
consider the word to mean that He
"pitied" and had compassion over
the Jews (Pesachim 66:A, 70B)
Some say that the word indicates
the idea that He "saved" and "pro-
tected" the Jews. There are some
(Gesenius for example) who
traced the word to a root meaning
"to pass by" or "pass over to
another side." Some late critics
were prone to interpret the word
as referring to a "dance" or a
"hop" which was in vogue at cer-
tain festivals. This is, however,
not borne out by recent findings.
Some late critics also like to prefer
the word to mean "harvest." This
also is not borne out by recent
findings. Some critics like to as-
sociate the term "Pesach" with
the Assyrian root meaning "quiet"
and "calm" in the sense that the
sacrifice brings a peaceful feeling
to God or to the one who offers it.
It is interesting to note that the
founder of higher Biblical criti-
cism admitted in one of his writ-
ings that he really did not under-
stand the derivation of the ex-
pression (Well-Hausen PGI 84).
Traditional Jews go by the quota-
tion of Rabbi Gamliel in the Pass-
over Haggadah who explains that
the Paschal offering was offered
because the Almighty "skipped
over" (or had pity or saved) the
houses of our fathers in Egypt.
What is the derivation of the
term matzo?
This term also has some specu-
lation attached to it. Some claim
that it comes from the term mean-
ing "to squeeze." In this sense
the matzo itself looks like it
has been "squeezed down;" others
say that it comes from the word
meaning "to argue or dissent or
squabble." It could be so because
of the struggle that the Jewish
people went through to achieve
freedom. Some consider it associ-
ated with Arabic and Aramaic
roots meaning to "split." This
would indicate that the matzo
would signify bread that is made
in a hurry and not perfected as,
indeed, the Haggadah states that
"they had no time to wait until
the bread would rise."
What is the derivation of the
term "Afikomen?"
A number of derivations have
been offered. In the Talmud, at
least four explanations are given.
One is that it represents the prac-
tice of going from house to house
or company to company after the
meal which is forbidden on Pass-
over eve. A second is that it re-
fers to the desserts which are for-
bidden after the Passover meal is
all finished. The third opinion is
that it represents fruits and nuts
(likewise some form of dessert)
which are forbidden after the
Passover meal (Pesachim 119:B,
Jerushalmi Pesachim 10:6). A
fourth opinion considers it some
kind of music which would be
used after other meals, but not
after the Passover meal. A 15th
Century commentary traces it to
the Greek word which means
"dessert" (Elijah Tishbi). Others
trace it to the Greek word mean-
ing "music." There has been a

recent tendency to associate it
with an Aramaic word which indi-
cates "uneveness, broadness or ab-
normality," the idea being gener-
ally that one would eat so much
that he would be overfilled and
blown up abnormally. The restric-
tion of not eating anything after
the Passover sacrifice has been
consumed (or today the piece of
matzo that symbolizes the Pass-
over sacrifice after the meal)
simply would then be taken to
mean that a Jew should be very
wary not to overeat on the night
of Passover. The whole concept
of the term "Seder" indicates an
order and regularity as opposed
to slovenliness. In ancient times
feasts of idolaters and Pagans were
known for their abundance and
over-indulgence. A Jewish cele-
bration such as the feast of Pass-
over was to be enjoyed with tem-
perance. Thus going from house to
house after the meal to eat more
was forbidden, as were desserts
and other forms of indulgence in
food and drink after the meal.
