Revival Hassidic Style

Another "Hoi Dahveinu," and
the walls of Beth Abraham would
have come tumbling down. Least
surprised would have been Shlomo
Carlebach.
A strapping, brush-bearded man
saunters across the stage to the
microphone, removes his jacket to
reveal a rumpled white shirt with
no tie and the hint at the "tzit-
tith" at his belt — all this to the
accompaniment of applause.
In a moment, the battered guitar
(held together with tape) is in his
linds, and he begins quietly, his
eyes closed.
You find yourself wondering, Is
this the celebrated Shlomo Carle-
bach, the Hassidic folksinger ac-
claimed in Israel and Europe?
Such an ordinary voice, and such
an ordinary guitarist .. .
But soon you find you're not at
a concert at all, you're at a hap-
pening.
At Cong. Beth Abraham Sunday
night, Rabbi Carlebach led a ca-
pacity audience in a hand-clapping,
foot-tapping revival that had the
elders jumping up in their seats
and youngsters dancing in the
aisle to a rousing version of "Ein
Keyloheynu."
Rabbi Carlebach's appeal to chil-
dren is well known, and, sure
enoue;h, they swarmed to him as
to a Pied Piper. Long atfer the ac-
tual close of the program, he was
singing, hopping among, his young
fans, who called "Shioimie! Shloi-
mie!"
Rabbi Carlebach introduced
each selection with a message—
reminding his audience to thank
God for the joys of life, or to re-

member the good works of their
forebears. The method of his
presentation could have come
right out of America's Bible Belt
country (finger snapping, con-
stant repetition of simple words),
but there was no fear tactic, no
threats of fire and damnation
lest ye repent — only the Has-
sidic joy of living and love of
God.
Rabbi Carlebach confided to his
audience that he came to the con-
cert "to hear my friend Shabsi."
His "friend Shabsi"—Cantor Shab-
tai Ackerman — was worth coming
to hear. Assisted by the Beth Abra-
ham Choir under Israel Fuchs, and
accompanied by pianist Rebecca
Frohman, Cantor Ackerman pre-
sented an excellent program.
As a matter of fact, for sheer
gift and technical skill, it would be
hard to find a match for Cantor
Ackerman. Including the guest
artist.
Yet, there is a spiritual fervor
surrounding Rabbi Carlebach that
defies the conventional definition
of artistry. Whatever it is, it works.
