Dr. Lewis to Direct
U-M Auto Program

The Stanley Steamer, the Tin
Lizzie, the Stutz Bearcat—all
evoke nostalgia and a joke or two
—and all are part of the dynamic
force on wheels that transformed
America, for better or worse.
The University of Michigan Tele-
vision Center offers a fresh, ori-
ginal look at the gas buggy in
"Four Wheels That Changed Am-
erica." David L. Lewis, associate
professor in the U-M Graduate
School of Business Administration
and a former executive with Ford
and General Motors, traces the
development of the automobile
which dramatically reshaped Am-
erica's economy, culture, manners
and mores. The program will be
seen Sunday, Feb. 20, 12 noon, on
WWJ-TV, Channel 4.
Historical film footage supplied
by the Ford Motor Co. and the
American Oil Co., and still pic-
tures from the Automobile Manu-
facturers Assn. take us back to
the turn of the century when the
auto industry began. Steam, elec-
tricity and gasoline powered the
pioneer cars, many of which
could be outdistanced by a horse.
The film portions—often mar-
velously funny—are highlighted by
thepiano-playing of Jerry Bilik
of the U-M School of Music, who
improvised a la silent-movie days
while watching the film.
Prof. Lewis notes that it was
Henry Ford who revolutionized as-
sembly line technique and re-
duced automobile prices to fit
everyman's pocketbook. By the
prosperous 1920s we were a
nation on wheels, and our love af-
fair with the car has endured and
flourished ever since.
Alfred Slote wrote and produced
the program, which was directed
by David Erdman.
